To all whom fit may concern Be it known that l', PEDRO TORELLI, of Benicia, county of Solano, State of California, have invented an Improved Sewer-Trap; and I hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to inlet or slit basins and traps for sewers to be placed at corners of streets and connecting with the sewer-pipes; and it consists in a double compartment chainber, said compartments opening into eachother at the bottom, one of which is so constructed as to contain earth or other like substance to prevent the escape ot'the gas through said compartinent, while allowing ready access thereto for purposes of cleaning, the other ofsaid compartments receiving the water and preventing thc return .and esca pe of noxious vapors by reason of the separatiiig-partition reaching below the waterlevel. `Both compartments are covered by a lid above, and provided with an opening fitted with a plug in thebottom to allow the escape ot' the water when desired, which remains below the level ofthe exit-port. These compartments are appropriatelyprovided with inlet and exit ports, the former being in relation with the gutter, thelatter connected with A more particular description will hereinafter appear.
The object of my invention is to provide a trap which will prevent the/escape of noxious vapors from sewers and from the water remaining in the basin ot' the trap, and at the same time one which will permit ready access to all its parts for the purpose of cleaning, or for any other necessary reasons.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure is a vertical sectional view-of my sewertrap.
Let A represent the body or casing of the device, preferably made curved or contracted below and fiat above. Its upper surface has the large opening B, covered in any appropriate manner by a hinged or removable lid, C,
which will allow access tothe interior of the casing. This casing A is to be placed in the curb at a corner, and has in its outer wall, facing'the gutter, ,the extended inlet-opening D, and in its inner wall, at a lower level, the exitopenin-g E, which latter opening connects with the sewer by means of a pipe, which must be (No model.)

In compartment 1;, just above the level of the exit-opening E, is a horizontal diaphragm, G, dividing the said compartment into two divisions. The diaphragm is provided with an opening, c, and fitted with a cover, d, which can be easily removed. The space thus formed in compartment b, above the horizontal diaphragm G, is filled with some substance, such as earth or sand, or any suitable material which will serve the purpose of prevent ing the escape of noxious gases from below.

H, closed ordinarily with a plug, connectedin any manner (here shown with a chain) with the parts above, whereby said plug may be removed when it is necessary to allow the escape of the water which, being below the level of the exit E, reinainsin the trap. The aperture H connects with the pipe passing beneath the trap to the sewer. f
The operation of the deviceiisjas'follows: The casing A is placed at the corner in position to receive the water from the gutter at its inlet-opening D. The water then passes down under the vertical diaphragm F, and rises in the compartment b until it flows ont into the sewer-connection through the eXit-openin g E. The noxious gases cannot return against` the liow of the water, nor can they rise through the compartment b, because of the body of earth or sand above it. When either compartment requires to be cleaned easy access is had to them through the lids closing them, as shown, the earth or sand above compartment b being taken out and replaced.
When necessary, the plug or stopper in the aperture H may be drawn out., and the water left in the bottom let out into the pipe below connecting with the sewer.
The advantage of my invention is the ease in which a body .of water prevents the return and escape of the gas, and that others have been made with more than one compartment.
