UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. HATHAWAY AND BENJAMIN S. TAYLOR, OF JERSEY CITY, N. J.
PERMUTATlON-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,200, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed February ll, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE M. HATHA- WAY and BENJAMIN S. TAYLOR, citizens of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Looks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to permutation-locks adapted for service in any position -in which such locks are useful; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
The important object of this invention is to simplify the construction of permutation-locks and avoid the necessity of employing the-numerous elements'ordinarily used without detractiu g from the usefulness of the device and without rendering the operation less efficient and certain.
To this end our improved permutation-lock embraces but four esential elements, viz: first, operating permutation disks; second, combined pawl and lock-bolt; third, a compound spring, and, fourth, a keeper.
The invention is designed as an improvement upon the state of the art generally, and particularly upon the device for which a patent is applied for and filed of even date with this application. v I
In carrying out the invention we employ an ordinary shank having a rectangular end, which is received into a corresponding aperture within an operating-disk having a pin upon its under side and a peripheral recess with an inclined side, and held rigidly in place by means of a set-screw. The pin operates reversible disks having pins upon either'side, upon the same annular line, and recesses in their peripheries. These parts have been fully described in the application referred to, and form no part of this invention.
In this invention we form the pawl and lock- (ModeL) bolt in one piece, allowing the said piece to have a suflicient rocking motion to allow the pawl-arm to enter the recesses or ride along the peripheries of the disks uselessly without interfering with the efficient action of the locking-bolt. A single spring is provided with a Socket formed by bending the same upon itself, and the socket is passed over a stud or lug upon the faceplate, one end being divided into independent spring-arms, each arm controlling byfriction one of the reversible disks, and the other end bearing upon an arm upon the pawlbolt.
It will be understood that the operating mechanism upon the face of the lock may be the same as that set forth in the application hereinbel'ore mentioned.
Our invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a bottom-plan view, partly in section; Fig. 2, an edge view; Fig.
'3, a detail, and Fig. 4 views of the disks.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the lock-plate; B, the shank; O, the reversible disks, having pins 0 and recesses c,-
'and D, the operating-disk, having pin 61 and arms 9 back of the kerfs which form the independent spring-arms. It will be observed that the portion of the arm g near the stud H bears upon that portion of the arm g between the studs H and h, and as the lock-bolt is retreated or withdrawn from the keeper by reason of the pawl-arm locking in the recesses c (1, this pressure serves to automatically liftthe springarms from their frictional contact with the disks and allows the said disks to move freely with the bolt.
A curved arm, 1, formed in one piece with the arm F and locking-bolt E, extends backward to the peripheries of the disks, where it is provided with a transverse arm, t, which acts as a pawl in the recesses c d, the port allowing sufiicient rocking motion to effect this action.
It will thus be observed that a single lock bolt and pawl and a single spring produce the locking and unlocking, and the placing on or ofi' of the combination at will.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we clai1n,and desire to secure by Letters 10 Patent, is-
The combination of the compound spring G, soeketed at g, and having the arms 9 with the bolt E, having arms I and F, disks C D, and studs H h, the said spring being adapted to throw the bolt and to automatir 5 cally relieve the friction upon the tumbler as the bolt is withdrawn, as specified.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in presencetwo witnesses.
