UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo JACKSON M. `VAN B. ILGENFBITZ, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SHIPS WIN DLASS.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,095, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed November 15, 1880. (No model.)
and to the letters of reference marked thereon;
The object of this invention is to reduce unequal wear ot' the ratchet-teeth and pawls of a windlass; and it, briefly stated, consists in providing the ratchet-disk at the outer end of the head with a liange to prevent the pawl, which rests thereon, from moving outwardly as the same becomes loose from wear.
It further consists in Hanging the pawl, which, in connection with the inner ratchetdisk, prevents "reverse movement of the windlass-head, whereby the said pawl is retained in a central position onthesaid disk independently of the bolt from which it depends.
In the further description of my said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure I is a top'view of the improved windlass and the post to which it is secured. Fig. II is an end view of the same. Fig. III is a sectional View of a part of the windlass. Fig. IV is :an exterior view of another part of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views.
O C are the windlass-heads, fastened to the shaft A. The heads G are each provided with two toothed disks, b and c, the former located at the inner and the latter at the outer end of the head. The pawls which engage with the ratchet-disks b and c are respectively represented by d and e. I
D D are sleeves,nto which the handspikes, by means of which the windlass is operated, are inserted, and towhich the pawls e are pivoted.
E E are iianges secured to or forming apart of the ratchet-disks c, designed to prevent lateral movement of. the free ends of the pawls e. Lateral movement of the free end ot' the pawls d is prevented by the projections f, which eX- tend from the under side thereof, as shown in the drawings. l
I claim as my invention- 1. In a Windlass, the head O and ratchetdisk c, combined with the iiange E, substantially as and for the purpose herein specitied.
2. In a windlass, the head C and ratchetdisk b, combined with the pawl d, the said pawl having the projections fon its under side, substantially asand for the purpose specified.
