ATTORNEY oer-ice 2,420,428 HEAT-TREATING BASKET Application September 2, 1944, no. 552,415
This invention relates to heat treating bas- .kets and has for an object the provisions of improvements in this art.
Heat treating baskets are given severe use because of repeated cycles of high heating and rapid cooling. They are loaded with metal parts and heated in a furnace to a high temperature, such as a critical temperature of cherry red for steel or the like, and then cooled in such manner as the parts require. When such baskets are made by welding their elements together, as is now common, the repeated great changes in temperature cause cracks and breaks to develop to such an extent that the baskets soon become useless.
According to the present invention a basket is provided which is of a very loose construction so as to allow free movement of expansion and contraction within reasonable limits, the parts being so designed, however, as to cause the basket to hold its shape beyond these limits of expansion and contraction.
13 Claims. (Cl. 263-47) The desired structure is largely achieved by" using side standards of an improved design which have a unique connection with side elements, such as rods, and bottom elements, such as rods and bars. The construction is of such a nature that the baskets may be very rapidly assembled from a few standard parts by unskilled labor and also quickly repaired to replace one or more elements without dismantling the Whole basket.
One embodiment of the invention will be described by way 'of example in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a plan view of a. heat treating basket embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevation;
Figure 3 is a side elevation;
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view of a corner detail;
Figure 5 is another perspective view of the corner detail;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a side detail; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of an end detail.
Referring to the drawings; the basket comprises corner standards or brackets I, end brackets 2, side brackets 3, channel-shaped bottom bars 4, transverse bottom rods 5, spacers 6 on the bottom rods, and side rods 1. Generically all of the elements a, 5 and I may be referred to as bars.
The rods are passed through oversized holes in the bottom bars 45 and the standards I, 2 and 3 and are retained by washers 8 and cotter-pins 9, the rods being provided with suitable holes for the cotter pins. If desired, washers and cotter pins may also be provided on some or all of the" side rods 1 on each side of the standards 2 or 3, as shownin Figure 6.
Each of the standards is threaded by the several side rods I of at least one side and the lower end of each standard is connected with two or more bottom elements of one type and one or more bottom elements of the other type.
As shown in Figure 6, the side standards 3 are threaded by the rods 1 of one side and their lower ends are connected to two bottom bar elements 4 and are threaded by one bottom rod element 5. In plan, the side standard is U- shaped,- having a wide back plate Ill, a long front or outer flange II and a short inner flange l2. The lower ends of the flanges I I and i2 extend alongside or into the spacesbetween the side walls of the channel bars I and the bottom rod 5 is threaded through both of the flanges II and I2 and the side walls of the bottom bars 4. The side rods I .extend through the back plate ll! of the bracket. I
As shown in Figure 7, the end standards 2 are threaded by the rods 1 of one side and their lower ends are connected to one bottom bar element 4 and are threaded by two bottom rod elements 5. In plan, the side standard is U-shaped having a back plate l3 and side flanges M. The lower ends of the flanges I! extend alongside or into the space between the side walls of the channel bar 4 and the bottom rods 5 are threaded through both of the flanges l4 and the side walls of the bottom bar 4. The side rods 1 also extend through both of the side flanges l4.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the corner standards I are threaded by the rods '1 of two sides and their lower ends are connected to two hottom.bar elements 4 and are threaded by two bottom rod elements 5. In plan, the corner standard is U-shaped in part and V-shaped in part, having for the U-shaped part a back plate [5, a long side flange l6 and a short side flange I1; and having for the V-shaped part a wing is and a wing or flange l9. The lower ends of the flanges Hi, I! and I!) extend down alongside the side walls of the channel bars and the bottom rods 5 are threaded through the flanges and the side walls of the bottom bars. The rods 1 of one side extend through the flange IS and the rods of the other side wall at a corner extend throughthe inner wing ill. The wing l8 and the flange [6 are joined at their side exthey will not strain each other.
' 3 tremities 'and themselves form a reverse V at the corner whereby the rods may be positioned at common levels without interfering with each other. After the rod of one side has been inserted the rod of corresponding height of the other side may be inserted past the end of the The assembly and repair procedure will be apparent from the foregoing description. The assembled device presents no parts which are not perfectly free to expand and contract in a simple linear element when heated and cooled. Also the several parts "are loosely Joined in order that There is no welding or jointing required for assembly. Nevertheless, because of the special shape and disposition of the standard relative to theother elements of the basket, all of the parts are securely connected together and the basket strongly retains its shape except for the liberal looseness in all directions which is provided.
While one embodiment has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that the invention may have various embodiments within the limits of the prior art and the scope of the subioined claims.
What is claimed is:
