My invention relates to improvements in bench vises, the primary object in view being to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive vise for use on benches, or work tables to hold stationaryfor servicing, in convenient positions for rotation of parts, starters and generators of all types as used on all makes of automobiles, also all types of generators as used on airplane engines, and most types of starters for airplane engines, and which is adapted for easy, quick swinging and sliding adjustment into different set positions as may be required for access to various parts.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improved vise comprises, as the basic components thereof, a pair of fixed and relatively movable jaws I, 2 swingably adjustable, as a unit, on the upper end of a post 3 about an axis transverse to that of said post, and a sleeve-type clamp 4 for mounting the post 3 in a bench top 5, or the like, for endwise and rotary adjustment in said top.
The fixed jaw I has the form of a bar 6 which is substantially C-shaped, whereby the jaw is open at its front, and which is formed with a, V-shaped clamping end 1. The movable jaw 2 has the form of a plate within the fixed jaw arched in the plane of the fixed jaw I and reversely relative to the arch provided by the end I of said fixed jaw I. The movable jaw 2 is rotatably mounted on the inner end of a hand screw 8 threaded through the other end of the fixed jaw I and provided with the usual hand grip 9. A keeper rod I is slidably fitted at one end in a bore II in said other end of the fixed jaw I to extend alongside the screw 8 with its other end suitably fixed to the movable jaw 2, as at I2. The keeper rod III prevents the movable jaw 2 from turning with the hand screw 8.
The described fixed and movable jaws I, 2 are swingably mounted on the upper end of the post 3 by means of a stud l3 extending outwardly from the closed side of the fixed jaw I laterally of the same and at a right angle to the major axis of said jaw I, said stud being rotatably mounted in a transverse bore I4 in the post 3, and in a bushing I5 extending laterally from said post. A suitable clamping nut I6 is threaded onto the stud I3 to be turned against said bushing I5 and is provided with hand grips I1. A pair of friction gripping discs I8, II are interposed between the fixed jaw I and the post 3 around the stud I3, one being suitably fixed, as by welding, not shown, to the post 3, and the other being similarly fixed to the jaw I.
The clamp 4 comprises a sleeve I8, of resilient metal, and in which the lower end of the post 3 is rotatably and slidably fitted. The sleeve I8 is extended through a suitable aperture I8 in the bench top 5 and provided with a head 20 at its upper end and countersunk in the top 5, for a purpose presently seen, and suspending the sleeve from said top. The sleeve I8 is longitudinally split, part way, as at 2I, for clamping against the post 3. A set collar 23 on the post 3 is provided for coaction with the head 20 to prevent the post 3 from slipping downwardly in the sleeve I8. The head 20 is detachably attached to the top 5 by screws 22.
Means are provided for compressing and clamping the sleeve I8. Surrounding the sleeve I8 below the top 5 is a coupling box 24 suitably apertured to fit around the sleeve I8 and detachably attached thereto by a pair of bolts 25 extending through one side of said box into said sleeve. At the other side thereof, said box 24 is provided with a bushing 26 extending from said box radially oi the sleeve I8 and in which is slidably and rotatably fitted a shaft 21 threaded into the box 24 and provided with a clamping block 28 swiveled thereon in the box 24 opposite the sleeve I8. By turning the shaft 2'I,the block 28'- may be forced against the sleeve I8 to compress the sleeve against the post 3 and clamp said post in fixed position. A handle 29 is pivoted, as at" 30, on the outer end of the shaft 21 for swinging to extend from either of opposite sides of said},
shaft for use as a crank in turning the shaft 21.
As will be seen, the V-shaped end 1 of the fixed jaw I provides a notch therein for cooperation with the arched movable jaw 2 to securely clamp cylindrical parts, such as starter and generator casings, between said jaws. The described mounting oi the fixed jaw I on the post 3 provides for adjustment of the jaws I, 2, as a unit, into diflerent inclined planes relative to the vertlcal, to correspondingly tilt such casings into different set positions. The friction discs l6, l1 facilitate holdingthe jaws I 2 stationary relative to the post 3. By loosening the shaft 21, and
adjusting the collar 23, the jaws I, 2 may be ad-' position. A particular advantage of my inv'ention is that the post 3 may be easily removed from the sleeve l8, with the parts carried by the post, leaving the bench top 5 clear of obstruction for performance of work thereon.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of the structure, op-
eration, and advantages of my invention.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A vise for use on a bench comprising a post, means adapted to mount said post in the top of said bench in upright position, a pair of jaws at the upper end of the post one mounted on the other and movable into and from clamping rela-- tion thereto. and means to mount said other jaw on said post for rotary adjustment about an axis transverse with respect to said post, the means first mentioned comprising an adjustable collar on said post, a sleeve adapted to extend through said top and in which said post is removably and rotatably mounted in any selected position of vertical adjustment by means of said collar, said sleeve being split for compression against the post to clampingly engage the same, and manipulative means for compressing said sleeve comprising a screw shaft extending radially of said sleeve and provided with a handle, a coupling box secured to said sleeve beneath said top, said screw shaft being threaded in said box, and a block swivelled on said shaft inside said box for engagement with said sleeve by turning of the shaft.
