1 The 4present invention relates to locks and specifically -is concernedV with 'a novel padlock wherein a tumbler carrying and key controlled plug is utilized to operate bolt means for unlocking the latter from a conveniently accessible shackle, The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of Ya simplified padlock having `relatively fewparts to assemble and einbodying offset and -pivoted bolts adapted to be actuated upon rotation o f the plug to withdraw the Ylocking portions of the bolts simultaneously from the spaced legs ofthe slidably and rotatably guided shackle. The invention has as a further objectvprovision of a hollow casing having a rearwardly arranged bearing integral with spaced sockets disposed within the casing and Yhaving a hollow boss integrally merged with one of the sockets and within the body of the casing, the arrangement being such that spaced fulcrum pins for pivotally sustaining the bolts are removably mounted in the sockets whileone oi the fulcrum pins traverses the hollow boss to characterize stop means to preclude the compl-ete withdrawal, of the shackle which is spring con; trolled and automatically shiftable outwardly upon the disengagement of the bolts from the legs thereof. Further functional and structural features of the invention will appear from the fol'- lowing detailed specification considered with' the accompanying drawings wherein: v
Fig', =1 is a rear elevational View of the Ypadlock with the cover thereof removed to illustrate the internal mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an exploded view of the padlock.
j According to the invention the padlock P ernbodiesa casing C that is preferably die cast -and is provided with a tubular concentrically arranged bearing B integrally merged with tli front wall I of the casing.
Rotatably mounted within and guided by bearing B is the key receiving cylindrical plug' Il having rthe conventinal 's'lidab'ly guided sprint;r controlled plate tumblers I2 adapted to be re#- ceived iria slot as I3 interrupting the bearing to rmvably interlock therewith. l
With th'e key K arranged in the plug, tumblers I2 are out of slot I3 and flush with the outer surface of the cylindrical body of the plug and hence the nner may be rotated by the key.
Integral with and laterally extending from the tearing B' are the spaced seekers I4 eiosely and reinoiably receiving fulcru-m pins I5 normally adapted to projecta small distance out of th'epin vpositioning sockets I4,
Disposed -laterally of bearing B but merged with one of the-sockets AIll and integral therewith and bearing B is the boss lI 'Il having the vertical bore I8 for 'slidab1y yand-rotatably guiding the long Yleg I9 of the U-shaped shackle 20.
The bore i8 of boss I'I is normal tothe bore or opening 2| in the adjacent bearing I4 and intersects or communicates therewith to permit 4`its removably associated pin or post I5 inserted in opening 2i to partly extend into and overhang bore I8 and form a stop to 'coact with collar '2;2 of the leg I 9 having the flattened face 23to-per mi t access to the iiange 22 and including a lnotched ornkeepernporton 24. Y n Y Y,
t Removably and pivotally sustained by the removable pins AI5 are the opposed locking .iaws
a'2li' provided with Nlower limbs 26 having the straight faces 2l. These jaws also include openings 278 closely 'but lremovably receiving fulcrum pins I5 to dene a pivotal'connection.A
The upper limbs of the -jawsrembody the 'infclined intermediate `porrtions 29 which extend in a forwardly direction towards "bearing Band overhang the latter below the top wa1l`30 of the casing andthe terminals of the upper limbs each embody a lateral extending cam shapedlip `3'I for disengageably interlocking with the `keeper portions or notches 24 and 32 of the long and short legs I9 and 3 3 of the `shack-le respectively.
I The lower limbsj26 of the jaws are arranged in the spaced slots 34 at the rear end of the plug and are adapted to bespread apart or actuated when therectilinear faces 2'I are operated by the rectilinear faces 35 of the opposed slots '34 upon yrotation of the plug.v
Lugs 3l extending from the intermediate po'rtions of the jaws or levers 25 removably hold the helicoidal spring 36 which tends to urge the upper terminals of the jaws apart and the lower limbs 26 interlocked with the walls of slots 34, the lower terminals awaiting tobe actuated by the,l web vorrestricted portion 35 also having the straight faces 35 straddledbythe lower limbs.
rupte'd by a cutaway portion or recess p33 receiving Aa complementary elosurelip 39 remove ably and closely fitting into recess 3-8 and integral with the cover 4G having a substantiallyrannular inside raised boss 4I seated'against projection 42 'extending vfrom bearing Band against the fulcrurn pins I5, thus desirably sustainingV the hitter liaseekets |4 and ene'oinitanuy'iirleny positioning the cover relative to the casing after tated clockwise or counterclockwise.
3 which the latter has its beveled rim 31' spun over at 43 to hold the cover in its set position.
Extending from and integral with the casing are the hollow nipples 44 and 45, the former together with boss I1 rotatably and slidably guiding the leg I9 of the shackle while the latter removably and rectilinearly guides the displacement of the short leg 33.
Conned within the bore i8 of the hollow boss I1 is the helicoidal spring 46 and collar 22 is seated on this spring and hence the shackle is resiliently seated and is automatically projected Vin a direction away from the casing upon the disengagement o the lips SI from the notches 24 and 32.
With the present invention no rivets, screws or similar fastening means need be utiliz-ed. Moreover the padlock comprises relatively few simple parts adapted for quick assembly or replacement.
With the cover 4I) in its closed relation with the casing, the iulcrum pins are against boss 4I of the cover and if the key be inserted in the plug, the tumblers I2 are withdrawn from slot I3 in the bearing. Hence, the plug may be ro- In either case, walls 35-of slots 34 of the plug shift the lower limbs of the jaws outwardly as indicated by the dash and dot lines in Fig. 1 while the oiset 'upper limbs of the jaws swing towards each other against the resistance of the normally ex- Thus lips 3I are removed -from the legs of the shackle and the latter is projected outwardly by the formerly compressed Spring 46 until collar 22 strikes the fulcrum pin I overhanging bore I8 of the boss I1. By such yaction the short leg 32 is completely withdrawn vfrom lthe nipple 45 and the shackle may' then be rotated relative tothe nipple 44.
v For again interlocking the shackle with the boltg'the former is rotated to aline leg 33 with the nipple 45 and the shackle is depressed against the spring 46 and with the plug in its neutral position lips 3| of the bolts interlock with the keepers 24 and 32 and such action is maintained bythe spring'BB.
The simplicity in the matter of assembling is apparent. To this end, spring 45 is iirst insertedinthe'bore I8. Thereafter leg I9 is positioned in thenipple 44 and depressed. The plug is then positioned in the bearing B. The fulcrum pins .are know inserted in the sockets I4 leaving predetermined portionsthereof projecting from the bearings. ThereafterV the opposed bolts are mounted on the iulcrum pins and interlocked ywith the plug. Spring 36 is then arranged on the projections 31. Following this, the cover is disposed Vwithin the rim 31 and against the inherannular but interrupted shoulder 41 and the projecting lug 42 of the bearing B. By such positioning of the cover 49, the rearwardly inclining* lip 39 thereofis received in the complementary gap 38 and becomes seated against the shoulder 43 and under the arcuate and overhanging'ledge or margin 49 of the top wall 3U integrally'merged with and interconnecting the ' spaced nipples 44 and 45 after which the beveled rim 31 is spun over as at 43 to firmly anchor the cover in place and pursuant to the -positioning of the cover, the terminal portion 50 ofY the plug is rotatably received in the centrally arranged recess 5I of the cover or closure.
. Various changes may be made vin detail of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages therein.
