Description

I April 15, 1947. 'r. G. GRIFFIN PIPE FITTING Filed Aug. 22, 1944 Patented Apr. 15, 1947,
PIPE FITTING Timothy G. Griffin, Bronxville, N. Y., assignor to Griflin Wellpoint Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 22, 1944, Serial No. 550,536
1 Claim.
and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the invention with parts broken away.
Figure 2 is an end view of the invention.
Figure 3 is a detail side view of the pedestal and header pipe sections mounted thereon.
Figure 4 is a detail side view of the two connected nipples or spacers.
Figure 5 is a detail end view of the same, with the closed or blocked nipple in position reversed to that shown in Figure 2.
In these drawings, the numeral I design-ates two short sections of longitudinal aligned spaced header pipe of the same diameter, mounted upon a pedestal 2 to hold them in place adjacent each other substantially constantly spaced apart, and 3 are interchangeable nipples of the same diameter as each other and that of said pipe sections, and one of which nipples is interposed between said sections and open to passage of fluid therethrough and the other 3' of which is plugged or closed at 3". These nipples, or spacers, are transversely aligned, spaced apart and connected to each other by a neck 4, so that the one nipple is supported directly above the other.
The pedestal 2 has at the ends thereof neck connections 5 with the pipe sections, thereby providing a slot 6 between the mount and each pipe section. Tubular couplings l are provided between and have leak tight engagement with the adjacent end portions of the pipe sections and the nipple, said couplings engaging said slots and being adjustable towards and away from each other within said slots and upon the adjacent end portions of the pipe sections. The pedestal mount 2 is provided with a, horizontally extended base whereby it is adapted to rest upon the ground or other support.
Thus when the header line is to be closed or opened as the case may be, it is only necessary to ;loosen and adjust the couplings I for removal of the one spacer or nipple and substitution therefor of the other and readjust and tighten the couplings, this involving a mere reversal of the connected nipples one of which may be colored differently from the other so that there maybe no mistake. Each of the two short sections 1 of header pipe may be provided with a 1% inch plugged inlet 8.
This pipe fitting is adapted for the accomplishment of the opening or the closing of the header pipe line in a minimum of time well comparable to that required for the opening or the closing of a gate valve, particularly when the stated disadvantages are taken into consideration.
Obviously the pipe fitting of this invention would be useful in other types of pipe lines than that described.
1" designates a rubber gasket located between the band coupling 1 and the joint between the opposed ends of the header pipe section I and the nipple or spacer.
I claim:
A composite pipe fitting, comprising two short spaced longitudinally aligned pipe sections of the same diameter having a pedestal mount, said mount being provided at the ends thereof with neck connections with said pipe sections, thereby providing a slot between the, mount and each pipe section, said mount having a horizontally extended base adapted to rest upon the round or other support, two tubular nipples of the same diameter as eachother and that of said pipe sections and having a neck connection, one of said nipples being interposed between said pipe sections and open to passage of fluid therethrough and the other being supported by its neck connection directly above the first named nipple, closed to such passage and interchangeable in the pipe line with the first named nipple, and tubular couplings spanning the joints between and having leak tight engagement with the pipe sections and said nipples, said couplings extending through the slots between the mount and the pipe sections and being longitudinally adjustable upon the latter.
