UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE W. SPEGHT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-REFRIGERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,891, dated May 24, 1881.
Application filed April 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEoDoEE W. SPEGHT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window- Refrigemtor, of which the following is a specication.
The object ot' my invention is to facilitate the keeping ot' articles of food fresh and cool in a very economical manner.
The invention consists in a box fitting in the lower part of the window-opening and retained inthe same by suitable supporting-blocks and by the lower sash, which rests upon the top of the box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an 'inside elevation ot' my improved Windowrefrigerator. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
A box, A, is made of sucb length that it completely fills the space betweentbe stopbeads B of a window-opening, this box being made from one to two feet in height. The box is to be of such width that it extends from the inner surface of the wall C, or from a point inside of the sash, to the outer surface of the wall-that is to say, the outer surface of this box is to be flush with the outside ofthe wall. The inner end of the bottom D of the box is supported'by a longitudinal rail, E, or b v a number ot' short legs or blocks resting on the inside wooden sill, F, and the outer end of the bottom D is supported by rail G, or by a series of legs or blocks resting on the stone sill H. rIhe middle of the bottom D rests on the bottom transverse stop-bead, J. The top K of the box is provided with a stop-bead, L, and an intermediate bead, M, between which the bottom transverse rail, N, of tbe lower sash fits. The box A is provided with one or two doors, O, on the inner side, and may be provided with one or more shelves, P. The outer side of the box and the doors are provided with a series of apertures, Q, to permit the air to circulate through the box. The top and bottom and ends of the box are preferably provided with rubber strips to form close joints. As the bottom transverse rail, N, of the sash rests between the strips L and M, it assists in holding the box in the window-opening.
The window-refrigerator is designed to be used in winter, for it is Very difficult to keep butter, milk, meats, 8vo., fresh and wholesome in an ordinary refrigerator or in a pantry, as there is no circulation, and the heat of a stove or range heats the surrounding air to such an extent that the articles of food cannot be properly preserved. If my improved refrigerator is used, the external cold air can enter through the apertures in the outside ot' the box, and will keep the articles fresh. The box may be lined with metal, if desired.
The box may be provided with a shoulder or protecting moldings extending around the box on the sides and bottom and resting against the stop-beads, to assist in retaining the box in the window-opening.
Having described my invention, whatl claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A window-refrigerator made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting ot' a box fitting in the wil'idow-opening, as set forth.
2. In a window-refrigerator, the combination, with the box A, fit-ting in the window-opening, of the rails L and M on the top of the same, and of the supporting-rails E and G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
THFiODORE WV. SPECHT.
