BARN-FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,827, dated May 24, 1881.

Application filed January 26, IESL To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, UDOLPH SHERMAN, of Girard, in the county ofBranch and 'State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Barns and other Structures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved frame for barns and other structures, the construction of which will be hereinafter more fully described with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

A represents the sills, and B the vertical or upright posts, of my improved structure.

0 represents the corner-posts.

To the posts B are secured thebows D, which support the roof, as will be hereinafter described.

E E are the plates, which are supported in the usual manner upon the posts B and corner-posts O. Diagonal braces F, secured by metallic clamps G, connect the said plates at the points adjoining the corner-posts with the sills, to which they are secured in a similar manner, but at a short distance from the corner-posts. It will thus be seen that the braces F and clamps Gr serve to bind the bends, while the clamps G may be readily swaged down, so as to tighten the braces, thus strengthening the structure.

DiagonaLbraces H are employed between the sill, corner-posts, uprights, and plates upon the side of the structure in the usual manner.

Upon the braces F and cross-pieces I, at the ends of the structure, are supported uprights J, which, in turn, support the beams K of the roof. The said beams rest upon the bows D and support the rafters L, which are connected to the plates E and to the ridge M. Braces N con- (No model.)

nect the upper end of the central rafter with the ends of the plates, thus forming additional supports for the rafters. The bows D are firmly bolted to the longitudinal roof-beams K,which thus, as will be seen, tend to support the sides of the frame, instead of straining them, as is usually the case.

To the lower ends of the bows D are hinged a pair of platforms, 0, one on each side of the structure, which platforms are provided at their outer corners with chains P, passed through rings or pulleys P, secured to the bows at or near the points where they are bolted to the beams K. By means of said chains the said platforms may be drawn up to a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, so as to throw the said platforms out of the way. When lowered the platforms occupy positions directly over the barn-doors, which are placed upon the sides of the structure, thus forming convenient scaffolds or supports for persons engaged in loading or unloading wagons, 860.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the advantages of my invention will be readily understood.

The construction is simple and exceedingly durable, and the hinged platforms, which are supported by the roof-frame, are more convenient and less obstructive than flooring or scaffolding such as is now usually employed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I. In a barn-frame or similar structure, the combination of the sills A, corner-posts C, and the diagonal braces F, secured by metallic clamps to the upper ends of the corner-posts and by the clamps G to the sills at some distance from the lower ends of the corner-posts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a barn-frame or similar structure, the combination, with the bows D, of suitable uprights or supports and the hinged platforms 0, chains P, to support the outer orfree ends of said platforms, and mechanism for adjusting the same, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
