Description
WLT. BURROWS.
Wagon-Rack.
No. 205,835. Patented July 9,1878,
INVENTOR ATTORN EYS WITNESSES MFEIERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHH. WASHNGTON, D Cv UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
\VILLIAM T. BURROWVS, OF NASIIUA, IOlYA.
IMPROVEMENT lN WAGON-RACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,835, dated July 9, 187 application filed March 9, 1878.
To all wh'om it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. T. BURROWS, of Nashua, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hay-Rack, Hog-Rack, and W ood-Rack combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my wagon-rack. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is aperspective detail, and Fig. 4 is an end view open.
My invention relates to the construction of wagon-racks; and it consists in the means for securing the side beams, cross-bars, and stakes, and also in the construction of a hay and hog rack, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A A represent the two parallel side beams. B B are the cross-bars, and 0 (J are the upright stakes, said parts being all. connected together in the following manner.
At suitable intervals upon each side beam are secured angle-irons D D, which lie against the inner and top sides of the beam. The arms of these angle-irons extend beyond the beam, and have slots a a in them, as shown. In other words, the vertical arm of each angleiron extends below the side beam, and has a slot for the passage of the end I) of the crossbar B, said end b lying against the under side of the beam and projecting beyond the outside thereof.
In like manner the horizontal arm of the angle-iron projects beyond the outer side of the beam, and has a slot, through which the stake O is passed, said stake lying close against the outer side of the beam and extending below the same. Diagonally through the beam is passed a bolt, d, the upper end thereof passin g through the angle of the angle-iron D and a nut, e, screwed on this end of the bolt.
On the lower end of the bolt is formed an oval loop, F, having a central partition, f, so as to form two slots. The lower end of the stake G and the end b of the cross-bar B are chamf'ered, as shown, and passed through the loop F, one on each side of the partition f. By now tightening the nut e the stake and crossbar are both held to the beam, and at the same time the angle-iron D secured firmly in place on the beam. \Vith the stakes (J-G thus in position a wood-rack is formed.
G G represent curved stakes or arms connected by means of horizontal slots 11 ll, which may be arranged to extend over the bed to form a hog-rack, or outward from the same to form a hay-rack. The stakes G O are removed and the arms G fastened in the same manner in the angle-irons and loops.
\Vhen it is intended to form a hog-rack the racks Gr II are arranged to meet in the center, where they may be fastened together by hoops or other suitable means.
To make the change for a hay-rack, it is only necessary to interchange these racks, when they will curve outward from the lid.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The reversible curved racks, of such length that they may be arranged to extend across the bed to form a hog-rack, or outward from the same to form a hay-rack, substan tially as described.
2. The slotted angle-iron l) and the loop F, with partition f, bolt (1, and nut e, in combination with the beam, cross-bar, and stake, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WM. T. BURROWS.
\Yitnesses (l. A. GREELEY, J. W. MITCHELL.
