Description
W. H. OGILVIE. Apparatus for Consuming Sewer Gas. NO- 241,819- Pafented may 24,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HENRY OGrILVIE, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF I O WILLIAM L. BENNEM, OF SAME PLAGE.
APPARATUS FOR CONSUMING SEWER-GAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,819, dated May 24, 1881.
` Application filed June 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY OGIL- VIE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Consilining Sewer-Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Io Which- Figure 1 represents the invention, shown partly in section. and partly in elevation. Fig. 2 is a detached view of a gas-burner anda conical vacuum-head gas-consumer. Figs. 3, 4,
15 and 5 are detached views, showing methods of adjustments for turning both stop-cocks on or o" at one and the same time, or of accomplishing the same purpose by means of one stop-cock for both pipes.
My invention relates to devices and means used to destroy the deleterious effects produced by the escape of sewer-gas by concentrating the same at intervals in the sewer-pipe and delivering it to be consumed in combination with 2 5 the ame ignited from the gas of a gas-burner or its equivalent, as hereinafter specified.
The first division of my invention consists of certain combinations and appliances o f mechanical devices by means of which my said 3o process may be practiced.
The second division of my invention consists of the'process of consuming the escaping sewer-gas by the action of the heat generated (in this instance) from a lighted gas-burner of 3 5 an ordinary street-lamp post, impin ging upon and permeating the vacuum-head sewer-gas consumer.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, I have represented in the accom- 4o panying drawings the methods of applying and using the devices, and illustrating the effectual working of my improvements, and will proceed to describe the same.
The object of my invention is to concentrate,
45 deliver, and consume sewer-gas, and thus to prevent its entrance into buildings.
For the sake of lucid illustration, the ordinary and most-used earthenwa-re drain-pipe is shown in the drawings, and for the purposes 5o claimed a section of sewer-pipe, O, with dome C', is inserted in the sewer D where required,
or the sewer-pipe cau be tapped at any desired point and a dome of suitable material be attached thereto, in any of the ways well known to mechanics, (preferably opposite lamp-posts, 5 5 where used,) for the purpose of concentrating and retaining the sewer-gas until such time as it shall be delivered for consumption. It is proposed to use in combination therewith the street-lamp posts and appurtenances, as shown 6o itt Fig. 1, or any other proper substitute there- Through the core of the lamp-post L the ordinary gas-pipe and burner B runs, connected with street gas-main at A.
I? is a pipe, of suitable capacity and material, connected with the apex of the dome C', and also runs up to and rises vertically through the core of said lamp-post to a proper height for the purposes required, and is finished at top 7o of said pipe with a cylindricahconical, orother suitably formed slit or perforated vacuumhead, E, which should be made of copper, or of some suitable heat-conducting material, be adjusted by means of screw-threads or any simi- 75 lar device to the delivery-pipe P, and be supplied with proper stop-cock in order to shut off or turn ou the sewer-gas whenever desired, and should be adjusted in suitable proximity to the gas-burner for action, as hereinafter 8o specified more fully.
The operation ot' the invention is as follows: The gas from the gas-burner B being ignited, the tiame issuing therefrom heats the vacuumhead E to a high degree of temperature, rare- 8 5 fying the contents thereof, creating a vacuum, and necessarily causing a draft or suction from the sewer-dome C', (when the cock S is turned on,) causing the accumulated volatile gases to ascend therefrom through the delivery-pipe P, 9o and the gases, being lighter in weight than the surrounding atmosphere, escape through or at the outlet a of vacuum-head E, and are consumed by the dame from the gas-burner B, thus accomplishing a simple, effectual, and cconomi- 95 cal method of destroying the poisonous gases emanating from sewers, and preventing the transmission of the same into buildings.
The drawings show the application of my devices to the ordinary street-lamps which are roo illuminated with gas; also, one form of dome only, and one method of attachment of pipe thereto and with earthenware drain-pipe; but the delivery-pipe P may be connected with the dome in any Workmanlike manner known to mechanics, either to the outside orinside thereof; and the donie C may be substituted by a truncated cone or ogee-formed receptacle or similar device, and be made and formed of any suitable material, and properly secured to soWerdrain-pipe, where constructed differentl y from the sewer-pipe above specified, as well as Wherethe sewer-drain is constructed with brick.
It is evidentJ that my invention can be readily and economically applied to street-lamps and sewer-pipes already set and laid as well as to similar work to be executed. I propose to apply the same devices in principle herewith specified to lamp-posts, lanterns, or other similar devices burning oil, naphtha, or inflammable materials, in combination with sewerage or drainage pipes, as required-for instance, at country residences, houses and buildings in cities, or yards to buildings.
When it is desired, the stop-cocks of the gas and sewer pipes can be connected together by cranks and links, (see Figs.3 and 4,) or, as the pipes are close together, one stop-cock can be made so as to serve both pipes, (see Fig. 5,) and thus the gas in both pipes may be turned on or shut o' at one and the same time.
A pipe can be connected with the gas-pipe at any point desired, and thence running into the dome on the top of the sewer-pipe for the purpose of allowing a jet of gas to pass into the dome and mix with the sewer-gas, and thereby making the sewer-gas more inflammable.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The section of' sewer-pipe and dome, as liereinbei'orc described, in combination with a delivery-pipe for the purpose of concentrating and deliveringsewer-gas to a gas-jet, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, substantially as dcscribed,of the section ofsewcr-pipe and dome, the delivery-pipe, and the vacuum-head sewergas consumer connected to the delivery-pipe, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, substantially as described, of the section of sewer-pipe and dome, the delivery-pipe, the vacuum-head sewer-gas consumer, the slop cock, and the gas-burner, or its equivalent, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination, substantially as described, ofthe delivery-pipe, the vacuum-head, the gas-pipe, and the double stop-cock, so arranged in connection with the delivery and gas pipes as to turn them on and oi'at one and the same time.
Witness my hand this 19th day of May, A.
