Description
March 25, I947. e. w. MILLER JACK CONNECTOR FOR POWER TRANSMISSION LINES Filed Aug. 14, 1943 iNVENTOR ATTORNEY under action of the power. This mechanism invide sufficient space as indicated at l8 to permit lateral movement between the bar members as later described. The side wall It has a' rib or flange portion extending inwardly in the direction of the opposite side I! to support a wear plate l9 that is suitably attached to the guide housing and which extends along the length thereof as shown inrFig. 4. The upper surface of the wear plate is spaced from the top l5 of the housing a suificient distance toallow free sliding movement of the bar member 8 therebetween and the edge 2! thereof is spaced fromthe wall 1-! to accommodate toothed portions 22 depending from the lower edge of the bar 9. The bar members are ordinarily connected by interengaging means comprising a series of spaced teeth 23 on the bar member 9 engaging in notches 24 of the bar member 8. The teeth 23 preferably have shoulder portions 25 on the sides thereof in the direction ofthe well and inclined faces 26. in
the direction of the power. The notches 24 preferably conform to the shape of the teeth so that when engaged therewith a rigid driving connection is provided therebetween. In order to retain the bars in lapping engagement with the teeth received in the notches, the ends of the bars are secured together by fastening devices, such as screws 27, extending through suitable openings 28 in the bar 8 and into threaded openings 29 in the bar 9 (see Fig. 2).
The tooth portions on the lower edge of the bar 9 include a series of stop shoulders 30 facing in the direction of the well and have lower edges 3| sloping upwardly toward the base portion of the next adjacent shoulder as best illustrated in Fig. 5.
Mounted transversely within the guide housing at a point below the bar members is a shaft s2 carrying a cam-likepawl 33 operable between the sides It and I! and having a portion 34 adapted to engage the under edge of the bar member 53 forlifting the bar into clamping contact with the top of the housing. The portion t l is also shaped to provide a toe 35 for engaging the shoulders 39 to retain the bar members in fixed relation with respect to the guide so as to facilitate disengagement of the hook 2 from the link l when it is desired to suspend operation of the well being pumped and to effect taking up of slack in the rods after a repair has been made, as later described. Oneend of the shaft 32 projects through the side wall I! of the guide and carries a crank arm 36 by which the shaft maybe oscillated to actuate the cam. The guide member is attached to the post 6 by means of straps 3i and 38 having ends secured to opposite sides of the posts by suitable fastening devices as indicated at 39, while the opposite ends are attached to the sides It and ll of the guide member by similar fastening devices 40.
In operation, the interconnected bar members reciprocate through the'guide housing H5 in slidlng support on the wear plate l9 as long as the hook 2 is engaged with the, link 4. .During nor 4 mal operation, the shaft 32 is moved so that the cam 33 is in retractive position as shown in Fig. 2. However, when it is desired to disconnect the hook 2 from the link 4, the crank 36 is operated to move the toe of the cam into position "to be engaged by one of the shoulders on the 'bar 9 for stopping movement of the rods on the down stroke of the pump jack. The cam then supports the load acting upon the jack and the book 2 will be released sufficiently to drop from the link, leaving the" link in position to permit reengagement of the hook therewith when itis again desired to pump the well.
To reengage the link 4, it is Only necessary to swing the hook 2 into engagement therewith when the sections of the rods 3 are moving in the direction of the well being pumped. The cam is then disengaged from the bar 9 whereupon the load carried by the jack is transferred to the hook. v
'In case the string of rods should break while in operation, the sucker rods in the well will drop to their lowermost position and cause the pump jack to draw the ends of the break apart. Con- :sequently the hook 2 will drop from the link 4 and automatically disconnect the power.
To repair the break the fastening devices 21 will be removed from the bars 8 and 9 'so that the bars may be separated to disengage the teeth '21 of the bar 9 from the notches of the'barB; The bars may then be drawn apart longitudinally to extend the effective length of the 'string of rods and leave the link 4 in such as position that it is readily engaged with the hook 2 after the break has been repaired. 7
After the repair, the link 4 is reengagedwith the hook 2 and manually held in engagement therewith. The cam 33 is then brought into engagement with the lower edge of the bar 9 with sufiicient pressure so that the upper edge of the whereupon the bar 8 is manually moved laterally so that the notches therein engage the teeth 23 of the bar 9.1 Then. upon the retractive stroke,
pressure on the cam is released so that the power acts to lift the sucker rods inthe well through tooth engagement of thebar members. At the end of the reverse stroke the cam is again engaged with the bar 9 to stop movement thereof and to support the load thereon. Qn the next stroke the bar 8 again moves through the guide to advance its engagement with the teeth of the bar 9. At the end of this stroke lateral pressure by band will cause the notches to reengage the teeth and when the direction isreVersed the load is again picked up. These operations are repeateduntil the openings es in the bar 3 register with the openings 29 in the bar 9, whereupon thescrews are re-inserte'd to draw the bars to gether and retain the teeth in engagement with the notches. a
It is thus obvious that after a break, the link 4 may be readily engaged with the hook 2 upon. letting out of the bar members 8 and 9 and that rods against the load on the pump jack when the pumping operation is suspended.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described including, a guide having laterally spaced sides and interconnected at the top thereof, a pair of members having reciprocating support by the guide,-
means carried by the guide to hold one of the members in fiXed position relatively to the guide when the other is moved in one direction through the guide, interengaging means on said members, said interengaging means being manually engageable to effect movement of the members in the guide upon reverse movement of said other member, and means connecting said members to gether whereby said members reciprocate as a unit.
2. A device of the character described including, a guide having laterally spaced sides and interconnected at the top thereof, a pair of members having reciprocating support in the guide, one of said members having teeth on the edge thereof, means carried by the guide for engaging said teeth and to move said member in clamping engagement with the guide when the other member is moved in one direction through the guide, and interengagin means between the members, said interen gaging means being manually engageable to efiect movement of the members in the guide upon reverse movement of said other member, said interengaging means including teeth on one of the members engaging notches in the other member.
3. A device of the character described including, a guide having a top and depending sides, a pair of reciprocable bar members adapted to be connected in a string of rods, a Wear plate carried by one of the sides for supporting one of said pair of reciprocable bar members, said guide being of sufficient width to provide a space between one of its sides and said bar member carried by the wear plate, means for frictionally selectively retaining the other bar member in fixed relation with the guide while the first bar member is reciprocated in one direction on said plate in said space, and interengaging means between the bar members, said interengaging means be ing manually engageable for effecting movement of both bar members in the guide upon reverse movement of said other bar member.
4. A device of the character described including, a guide having laterally spaced interconnected sides, a pair of reciprocable bar members adapted to be connected in a string of rods, means carried by one of the sides for supporting one of said pair of reciprocable bar members, cam means for supporting the other bar member and for moving said other bar member into clamping engagement with the guide when the first bar member is reciprocated in one direction, and interengaging means between the bar members, said interengaging means being manually engageable for effecting movement of both bar members in the guide upon reverse movement of said first bar member. 1

A device of the character described including, a guide having laterally spaced interconnected sides, a pair of reciprocable bar members adapted to be connected in a string of rods, means carried by one of the sides for supporting one of said pair of reciprocable bar members, cam means for supporting the other bar member and for moving said other bar member into clamping engagement with the guide when the first bar member is reciprocated in one direction, interengaging means between the bar members, said interengaging means being manually engageable for effecting movement of both bar members in the guide upon reverse movement of said first bar member, and fastening devices for connecting said bar members to reciprocate as a unit.
