4 Claims.

This invention relates to articles of furniture and particularly to those employed by children for purpose of amusement.

The primary aim of the invention is to provide a toy rocker, having means for permitting rocking movement in a number of directions, and primarily longitudinally and transversely of the body of the rocker, whereupon is mounted at least one seat for the occupants.

One of the important aims of the invention is to provide a rocker for children, the supporting structure whereof comprises a number of intersecting or angularly arranged supporting elements, the edges whereof being arcuate to permit tipping of the rocker from side-to-side as longitudinal movement is established.

Further objects of the invention include the unique manner of disposing a series of angularly arranged rocking elements; the disposition of such elements whereby selected ones thereof are efiective as the occupants of the rocker manipulate the same; and the manner of arching the transverse rocker to prevent objectionable bump ing as rocking upon the longitudinal rockers occurs.

Other aims of the invention will appear during the course of the following specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein: i

In the form of the rocker chosen for illustration, the sub-structure comprises a pair of iongitudinal rockers l and I2, and a transverse rocker I4 disposed as illustrated in Fig. 1. The rockers l0 and I2 are substantially parallel to aid in forming the main body of the rocker including in addition to members i0 and I2, a seat I 6 and a companion seat l8.

These seats l6 and I8 may be placed as desired, but as shown, are balanced sofar as their position upon rockers l0 and I2 is concerned. They are disposed equi-distances to each side respectively of transverse rocker M. The space between rockers l0 and I2 is open and the intermediate portion of rocker l4, disposed between rockers Ill and I2, serves as a brace for the latter and as a foot engaging part for the occupants.

Each seat It and I8 is provided with retaining walls 20 to prevent accidental dislodgment of the occupants when the rocker is in use. Seats l6 and I8 are at the extreme ends of rockers l0 and I2 and serve as ti members therebetween.

Intermediate rocker 14 has its extremities projected laterally to each side of rockers l0 and I2 respectively, on a median transverse line, and when the weight of the two occupants in seats is and I8 is shifted to one side of the longitudinal axis of the rocker body, an upward tipping of either rocker In or l2, as the case may be, on the opposite side of said line, will raise from the supporting surface or floor, and one extremity of intermediate transverse rocker M will bear the weight of the load and prevent complete over-tipping.

In practice, the shifting of the weight of the occupants occurs but for a short time and the extended portion of rocker I4 is in use momentarily and until the occupants shift their weight to again cause rockers l0 and I2 to serve as the sole supporting structure.

Such manipulation as has just been set forth, causes an unsteady feeling. and creates exciting amusement, all without danger to the occupants of the rocker.

When rocker I4 is not brought into play, members l0 and I2 serve as the main supports to allow smooth and orderly rocking. This result is insured because the curvature of the lower edge of transverse rocker l4 between members l0 and I2, is as shown in Fig. 2. This curved edge 22 is of greater radius than the radius of the lower edges 24 of the end portions of rocker 14 to promote sidewise tipping when the occupants desire, yet to permit rocking upon members In and I2.

Rockers having physical characteristics different from the one illustrated and described might be made without departing from either the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

1. A rocker of the character described, com prising a number of angularly arranged, intersecting rockers; and at least one seat for occupants of the rocker, mounted on the supporting structure.

2. A rocker of the character described, comprising supporting structure having a number of intersecting rockers; and at least one seat for occupants mounted on the supporting structure, said rockers including a pair of rockers in substantial parallelism and disposed longitudinally of the rocker and a transverse, single rocker intersecting the pair of rockers and having a terminal portion projected to each side of the supporting structure, the lower edge of the said transverse rocker having a greater curvature to each side of the pair of rockers than between the said rockers.

3. A rocker of the character described, comprising supporting structure having a number of intersecting rockers; and at least one seat. for occupants mounted on the supporting structure, said rockers including a pair of rockers in substantial parallelism and disposed longitudinally of the rocker and a transverse, single rocker intersecting the pair of rockers and having a terminal portion projected to each side of the sup-- porting structure, said pair,- of rockers and. the

4 transverse rocker forming open frames for the feet of the occupant.

4. A rocker of the character described comprising a supporting structure having a pair of substantially parallel rockers in spaced relation; a seat at each end of the pair of rockers respectively; and a transverse rocker intersecting the said pair of rockers in the same plane therewith and on the median line thereof between the said seats, said pair of rockers having regular, uninterrupted curved lower edges, the lower edge of the transverse rocker having a curvature on a greater radius between the pair of rockers than the radius of curvature of the lower edge of the said transverse rocker on each side of the pair of rockers;
