' My invention relates to an improvement in carboy packages, namely, boxes or crates containing a carboy or other frangible container in which acids and other liquids are shipped.

It is essential that in a boxed carboy provision g' be made for preventing breakage of the carboy in transit, and in practice cushions of various types have been provided between the vcarboy and its box o1' crate.

The present invention provides an improved construction in carboy boxes, particularly with reference to the packing to be employed between the box and the sides of the carboy. The packing employed beneath the carboy and the construction employed at the top of the box may, so far f as the present invention is concerned, follow conventional practice. l

More specically my invention provides a carboy box or crate in which cushions or ypads are provided between posts at-the corners of the box or crate and the side of the carboy, means which I believe to be new and novel in construction being provided for holding these cushions or pads against displacement and under compression against the side Walls of the carboy.

In the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated one embodiment of my'invention:

Fig. 1 is a sectional plan view of a carboy crate or box constructed in accordance with my invention; and

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken'on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail: 2 designates a carboy box, crate or casing having four sides and a bottom, handhelds l and skids ii. This construction is conventional. Y

Fitted within each corner of the box and nailed or otherwise permanently secured in place therein is a corner post 8. These posts are of wood, triangular in cross section, and smooth faced, with the base of the triangle or inner face 9 of each post facing the carboy. The carboy has been designated lll.

In accordance with conventional practice the carboy may rest upon'cushions I2 carried by slats or strips lli at the bottom of the box.

Between each of the corner posts 3 and the carboy or bottle li] I provide cushions or packing i5 which are to bear against the carboy. These cushions are arranged in pairs, an upper and a lower cushion, at each box corner.

The cushions or packing it, which are of resilient material, such as rubbernsynthetic or natural-ground cork, felt, etc., are mounted in pairs on the smooth inner face Il of a cushion 4 Claims. (Cl. 217-54) carrier I8. It will be seen and understood that there is a cushion carrier for each corner post.y

Each cushion carrier is of wood, extends substantially from bottom to top of the box 2, and is provided on its rear face I9 with a vertically extending continuous rib 20, lying intermediate the sides of the carrier, preferably centrally of the carrier. v

The opposite face, that is, the front face of each cushion carrier is smooth and flat and parallel to the rear face and the cushions IS are cemented or otherwise permanently secured thereto. Each carrier, asl will be understood, is provided with an upper and a lower cushion.

The cushionsare preferably so disposed upon the flat face ofthe cushion carrier as to be abreast of and Contact the carboy l0 at the curve of the shoulder of the carboy and at the curve of the bottom of the carboy.

Itwill be appreciated from all of the foregoing that the cushion carriers extend vertically of the box 2 substantially from top to bottom of the box, and are parallel to the smooth innerface 9 ofeach corner post..

In order that the'cushions I6 may be placed under the necessary compression and that the carriers may not become displaced, I provide wooden spacer members 22, a pair for each carrier. s i L These members are simply straight wooden strips beveled slightly at their leading end adapted to be driven vertically of the box between the smooth face 9 of the corner posts and the rear face of the cushion carriers. A pair of spacers is provided for each carrier at each corner post, one spacer being located at one side of the rib 29 on the cushion carrier, and the other at the opposite side of the same rib.

The spacer members 22 are of the proper thickness to contact the smooth inner face 9 of' the co-rner post and the smooth portion of the rear face of the cushion carrier and to force the cushion carrier toward the carboy thereby to force the cushions into contact with the carboy under the desired compression. The spacer members are also of the proper width so that the outer edge 24 of each spacer member will contact the box side, while the inner side 26 contacts the side of the rib 2O on the cushion carrier. In this way not only are the cushion carrying members held in position against lateral shifting but rocking of the same is prevented so that I am always assured of proper cushion Contact with the carboy or other receptacle which is to be protected.

cushions between the box and the receptacle, cushion carriers for said cushions, a central rib along the outer face of each cushioncarrien box corner posts corresponding in number to said cush^- ion carriers, and individually removable members insertible between the cushion carriers and the comer posts at each side of said ribs; for moving the carriers toward the receptacle to place thesaid cushions under compression against the Vsides of said receptacle, said individually removable members constantly contacting'the sides of said ribsand the immediately adjacentbox sides, thereby positively preventing lateralrshifting and tilting of the removable membersv and said cushion carriers.

a-'cushion carrier at each corner of; the box, an abutment on the outer face ofeach carrier, a pair of cushions mounted on the inner face of each carrier, a smooth faced corner post at each box corner, a pair of separately removable members at each corner of the box between the corresponding corner post and cushion carrier and contacting said post and carrier throughout their length for forcing the carriers inwardly to compress said cushions against the receptacle sides, the two members constituting veachpair of said separately removable members being so disposed at each side of the corresponding carrier abutment and in constant Contact therewith and with the adjacent box sides thereby positively to prevent lateral shifting and tilting of the removable members and cushion carriers.

In combination a box, a receptacle therein, a post in each corner of the box triangular in cross section, two sides of each of said posts abutting two adjacent box sides, the third side of each post being smooth and facing said receptacle, a cushion carrier between the smooth face of each corner; post and said receptacle, a cushion secured to the inner face of each of said carriers for engagement with said receptacle, a vertically extending rib on the outer face of each of said carriers and spaced from the side edges ofthe carrier, and strips individually insertible between the outer face of each cushion carrier andthe smooth face of each corner' post, each of said strips constantly contacting a side of the carrier rib, the immediately adjacent box side, the smooth face of the corner post and the rear face ofthe cushion carrier, for separating the. cushionI car'- riers and theirV respective cornerposts sufciently tohold the cushionsI under compression against the receptacle sides, and positively to prevent lateral shifting and tilting of the cushion carriers and strips.
