JACOB B. BAUSMAN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
MONUMENT FOR MARKING LINES AND CORNERS OF LAND SURVEYS, 8w.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,592, dated May 17, 188 1.
Application filed April 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. BAUSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, Hennepin county, State of Minnesota, have invented a' new and useful Monument for Marking Lines and Corners of Land Surveys, or the boundaries of areas or parcels of land or parts of the earths surface, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish a durable and conspicuous monument or landmark that is not liable to be blown or Washed away by ordinary wind or rain storms, or removed or destroyed by grazing or burrowing animals, or destroyed by fire, or injured or removed hy the action of frost.
My invention consists in forming the monument or landmark of sheet or castmetal in the shape ofa frustum ofa hollow cone and providingit with perforations, for the purposes hereinafter mentioned.
Figure 1 is an illustration of the blanks of sheet metal from which the monument is formed. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the monument complete. Fig. 3 is a top View of the same.
A designates a blank, constituting one half of the frustum of a cone or monument, and A the other half of the same. These, when properly riveted together, form the frustum of the hollow cone B.
I do not limit myself to forming the monument in sections, as it is obvious that it can be formed in a single blank or sheet, and thus transported, and subsequentlyclosed by riveting a single joint; or the monument maybe made entire of cast metal.
a indicates perforations, of any desired size i or in any desired number, for purposes described as follows: first, to render the monument useless as a conduit, thereby adding to its security against theft; second, to reduce the weight of material without impairing the strength or durability of the monument; third, to guard against accumulation of water within the monument.
1) indicates perforations, of any desired size or number, serving not only the purposes already mentioned, but they may be so arranged as to indicate the character, location, or ownership of the said monument.
As heretofore stated, I construct my monument or mark of sheet metal, galvanized, and it may consist of two blanks rivetedtogether,
as in Fig. l, or it may be made from a single blank. For convenience and cheapness of transportation, the blanks need not be made up or riveted together until they arrive at the place where they are to be used.
At the point to be marked by the monument it is set or fixed firmly into the ground, and it may be sunk its entire length, ora portion of it left exposed to view; or it may be placed in or under a mound of earth or some other prominent mark or material, the monument itself to be filled with earth or any other material or substance that may serve to give it stability or aid in future identification of the same.
The advantages of my device are obvious to any one familiar with the manner of marking land -corners or skilled in the art. Its
conical form prevents its sinking by the force i of gravity in soft or marshy ground. This form also. resists the upheaving force of frost.
I prefer to have the perforations a and b of the device made at the factory. Other indicating-marks can be readily made with a coldchisel at the time it is intended to be used, or when the section, township, range, location, or ownership has been determined;
I am aware that cast-metal heads with perforations to receive bolts for holding the letters and figures of designation have been devised; that thcse are secured to trestles, tripods, or posts, by which they are anchored in the ground; but such is not my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A monument for designating townships, ranges, sections, and other subdivisions of land, boundaries, and ownership thereof, 850., consisting of a hollow frustum of acone made from one or more pieces or blanks of galvanized sheet metal, or of cast metal, as set forth.
2. A monument for designating the lines, corners, boundaries, and ownership of tracts or subdivisions of land, 850., consisting of a hollow frustum ofa cone made from one or more pieces of sheet metal or cast entire, and having the designating-marks and other perforations punched or cast therein or stamped thereon, as set forth.
, JACOB B. BAUSMAN.
