This invention relates to a new and useful electrical connection plug which is particularly adapted to the joining of two conductors together, which are capable of carrying heavy current.
An object of this invention is to provide a connection plug which will give improved and positive electrical connection -by means of gripping both the inside and the outside surfaces of a tubular conducting member.
Another object of this invention is to permit quick detachment of various portions of electrical circuits and also to provide sliding, or wiping, action of the parts when the connection is made; thus insuring a good electrical contact.
A feature of this invention is the gripping by spring tension members of both the inside and outside surfaces of a tubular conducting4 member to provide a. good, positive contact which will be capable of carrying large amounts of current.
In the previous prior art practice it is old to separately grip the inside or the outside surface to provide connection means, but so far as I am aware, no device has ever been disclosed which simultaneously grips both the inside and outside surfaces of a tubular conducting member. Also, in previous practice lengths of conductors havev been fastened together end to end in a great variety of ways. The manner of joining connections permanently will not be considered'in this specication. Temporary connections are commonly made in conductors having small diameters by rmly twisting the ends about each other. Larger conductors are commonly fastened together by means of passing a, machine screw through loops or eyes fastened at the ends of the conductor. Another means for fastening such conductors together is to clamp the ends between clamping plates and holding them in close relation -by means of small bolts. These joints are bulky and cause reflection of electrical energy, particularly at the ultra high frequencies, due to the great change in size of the conductor at the joint, and therefore, such means are wholly unacceptable for connecting lengths of the inner conductors in concentric transmission lines and various similar applications common -to shortwave radio frequency apparatus wherein a smooth continuity of size of conductor is highly desirable. The present invention not only overcomes these objections to the common means of joining conductors, but also provides, in addition, ease of assembly, positive electrical contact which is capable of carrying heavy current and,
also, the connection is readily separable if and (ci. iis-363) 2 when it is desired to make changes in the circuit connections.
This invention will best be understood by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which plug of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an elevation detail of a, modication of certain portions of the plug shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the bushing or main body portion l has its upper portion slotted with three slots at IA, the slots extending along a, substantial portion of its length. The lower portion of member I has located thereon a threaded stud 2, which is provided with spring contact members 2A and forms the Well-known type of banana. plug. The lower end of member 2 is threaded to receive connection nut 3. which has an outside diameter substantially equivalent to that of the inside diameter of member I and an inside diameter of a suitable dimension as to engage the spring contact members 2A. It will be seen by this construction that members I, 2 and 3 form one part of the connection, and
member forms the other part.
Fig. 3 shows an alternative construction for the inner male part in which a threaded stud 5 is slotted at the upper portion thereof, and has an outside diameter at the slotted portion' which is substantially equal to the inside diameter of the tubular conducting member Il. A short length of an unthreaded portion on the stud xes .the proper depth relation of stud 5 and bushing I. In this type of construction, wherein the stud 5 is substituted for the banana type of plug 2A the upper portion of stud 5 itself forms two springy prongs for acting in the same manner in making the connection as that of the banana plug.
In the assembling of members I and 2, or of I and 5. it is desirable that the assembly be made permanentby having solder run in the threads at 6. By providing longer threaded portions on studs 2 and 5 one part of .the connection can be fastened to a panel or metal plate so as to form one part of a. disc or simple plate condenser.
When adapting this device to a, concentric line, the portion at the extremity of one end of the inner conductor is to .be threaded for male and female threads, as shown at 1. The ailixing of the bushing I and a suitable plug 2 completes one part of the connection, the other part of the connection will be composed of one end of another length of the inner conductor which has a Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a, connection A tubular conducting member 4,
3 long circular aperture arranged in .concentric relationship to member I and is dilled to a suitable depth, thus forming a tube-like termination member corresponding to the equivalent shape and dimensions of the tubular conducting member 4.
The operation of the connection device of this invention is as follows:
When using the device for joining a conductor to a plane surface, first suitably secure the entire assembly of members l, 2 and 3 by means of the threaded portion of the screw plug 2 to the surface, the connection is made by thrusting part 4 into bushing l to the full depth of the bushing, and by the same action the banana plug portion 2A is introduced in proper relation to tubular conducting member 4. To open the connection it is only necessary to pull the tubular conducting member 4 out of bushing l. It will be noted that neither of these operations of making or opening a connection requires the use ofany sort of tools.
While the device of this invention is described as being applied to the joining of lengths of inner conductors in a concentric transmission line, it may also be adapted for mounting coupling loops through a panel, interconnections between am-` plier stages, and many other such uses. Therefore, the device should not be limited speciiically to the uses set forth in this specication.
