ANDREW GUNDELFINGER, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
VEHICLE-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,537, dated May 17, 1881.
Application tiled September 27, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, ANDREW GUNDELEIN- GER, of Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Seats 5 and I do hereby declare that the following s a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, which form a part of this specilication, and in wbich- 1 Figure l is a pla-n View of a wagon box or body tted with myimproved seat. Fig. 1fh is a detail View of the seat-locking mechanism. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of my sectional swinging seat; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing` a modification in the arrangementof the swinging seat-sections.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
My invention has relation to seats for vehicles; and it consists in an improved construction of a sectional swinging seat, as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the box or body of a spring-wagon ot any approved construction, upon the bottom of which, midway between its sides and at suitable distances apart, are cleats a a'. t t
B is 4the seat-support, the diverging legs of which are made with flanges fitting into the cleats a', and by making these cleats convergingand providingthesupportsB with a hinged plate, b, having a downward-projecting pin, b', which fits into a socket in the bottom of the wagon-box, the seatsupports may be held firmly yet detachably in their respective places in the wagon-box.
Each of the seats is made in two parts, C O. In Fig. 2 I have shown these sections hinged upon a pintle, f, which is attached to the seatsupport B, the outer end of each seat-section being supported upon the sides of the wagonbox A and held in place bythe locking device shown clearly iu the detail View, Fig. 1f". This device is simplya rod hinged in tbe outer end ot' the seat-section and bent to form a crank, g', which may be turned down to interlock with ears or catches 71I h, projecting from the wagonsides. Other means of fastening the seat-sections may be. adopted, if desired.
y Instead oi' hin ging the seat-sections together i upon the middle support, B, this arrangement may be reversed, as shown in Fig. 3, in which each of the seat-sections is provided with a pintle, c, at its outer end, which ts into sockets arranged on the inner sides of the wagonbox sides. The inner end of each seat-section basa short stud or pin, c', which, when the seat-sections are swung back in their locked or closed position, bears against the front side of the middle support, B, and thus prevents the seats from being swung too far back when occupied.
l prefer to construct the wagon-box witha folding end-gate, D, which, by unfolding its several hinged sections, forms a'coinvenient means of access to the Wagon from the rear, and by opening tbe swinging seat-sections the front part of tbe wagon may readily be reached.
Having thus described myinvcntion, I claiin and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the wagon box or body A, detachable seat-supports B, and detachable swinging seat-sections O O, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown audspecitied.
ln testimony' that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW GUNDELFINGER. y

JOHN ANTWEILER, HENRY HAE-ts.
