C'I PARENT. Music Rack..
No241,412.v
Patented may lo, 18811.
INVENTOR:
WITNESSES eff ATTORNEYS.
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PARENT, OF BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
Music-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,412, dated May 10, 1881.
Application med october 12, reso. (No maar.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs PARENT, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Music-Rack, of which the following is a specication.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved adjustable rack to be attached to brass-band instruments, for holding books or leavesof music.
Figure l is a front elevation of the device in position for holding a book or sheet of music. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation ofthe same on line a', Fig. 1.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the standard, consisting ot' a rod, c, bent at right angles at the lower end to enter a corresponding socket in a musical instrument, and of a tube, b, rigidly secured to the other end of said rod a, in the same line therewith, said tube portion b being provided with several openings, c,in its side for the adjusting-screw of the tubeB, that is telescoped within said standard A. Said tube B is solid at its lowerend, and is transversely perforated, as shown at d, to receive the end of the adjusting-screw j', by which it is held at any desiredV elevation, said screw f being passed throughany one of the openings c of the standard Ainto said opening d, to hold said tube Bin position, and being withdrawn to permit the moving oi' said tube B up or down for proper adjustment.
. Within the tube B is a rod, C, whose lower end is connected with the bottom of the tube BV bya spiral spring, D, whereby said rod C is held down.
Across the upper part ofthe rod G that pro- 40 jects from the tube B an arm, E, provided with terminal right-angled lingers g g, is secured at its center by a spring, F, that is wound about both rod G and arm E, and attached to said arm E is a loop, h, that projects above the top of the rod C, and serves as a handle, by means of which the arm is partially rotated for the purpose of raising its fingers g gfor the introstraight rod having right-angled terminal ingers 7s 7c pointing upward, with their tips slightly curved. To the center of said arm G is attached a clamp or clip, Z, provided with 'a tightening-screw, m, by means of which said armG is securely heldin a desired position upon the standard A.
A book or sheet ot' music (represented at H in dotted lines) being placed with its lower edge resting on the fingers 7c k ot' the arm G, the operator presses down the handle It, and thereby throws up the lingers g g of the upper arm, E, so that said book or sheet H can lie flat, and when said book or sheet H is adjusted the handle l1, is released with the effect of permitting the fingers g g to spring down upon the upper corners of said sheet or book H, as shown. In adjusting the sheet or bookH the rod E is pushed up by the contact of the upper edge of said book or sheet H with the tin gers g g; or it may be pulled up by means of the handle 7i, sothat when said book or sheet H is in position the tension oi' the spring D operates to draw said rod C downward, and thereby tighten the hold of the lingers g g upon said book or sheet H. The fingers g g and k k are so slender that lthey do not interfere with the musical characters that may be on said book or shee't H.
This device is of light weight, strong, durable, and easy of adjustment and application.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent- A musicrack, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of hollow standard A, containing an adjustable tube, B, within which is a spring-actuated rod, C, provided with spring-actuated cross-arm E, having fingers g g, and adjustable lower arm, G, having iingers 7c k, as set forth.
