UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
rnnvicn R. HOUSTON, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
FlRE-GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,364, dated May 10, 1881.
Application filed February 19,1881.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, Tnnvrcn R. HOUSTON, a citizen of the United States, resident at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a representation of a front view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 is a perspective de Fig. 5 represents a portion of the device in section, showing the construction of the lip.
This invention relates to improvements in grates.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, A is a chimney having the lire-place B. In the edges 1) of this fire-place are secured, one above the other, the pins 0 O, and opposite each other, on the inside, are the holes D D.
E is a front of somewhat the usual shape, having at the top the hooks c.
F is a back for the grate, consisting of the two bars f f, connected by the cross-bars z, curved at y, at bar f, the bar fhaving the extended endsy p one a little longer than the other, and barf having at the middle an extension, f". This back is put in place by inserting its ends y into the holes D D, the bars 2 curving backward, and bar f falling in under a lip, 11,, in the back of the fire-place, the extension f covering hole l at the back of fireplace. The lip a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, is made at the back, across the same, so as to come at a point where the barf will fall un- The front E is put in place by hanging the hooks e 0 over the pins 0 O, the side bars, 9 9, of the front resting against the pins 0 O.
(No model.)
The barf of the back F has at its middle the hook f composed of two fingers, f and on these the lower bar of the front E catches when in place.
F F are tines in the sides of the chimney, running from the openings Z l in the bottom ofthe chimney, leading into the room to the apertures k k, which open into the fire-place at the sides back of the grate.
K is a valve closing the opening Z.
At the back of the fire-place, below the grate, is an opening, L, and just at rear of the grate, where extension f comes, another opening, Z, these two being connected through the chim ney by the flue M. This furnishes air to the fuel at the back, the opening 1 extending down, so as to be partly behind the back F and partly above, the extension f in this latter instance covering the opening, and while permitting draft prevents fuel from falling into flue M, and yet it can be readily swung aside with the back to clean out the flue. These openings in the sides and back supply the fire with air all around, whereby combustion is facilitated and the consumption of the fuel is better insured.
What I claim is-- 1. The front E, having hooks c e, in combination with the chimney having pins 0 O, and back F, having hook f substantially as described.
2. The combination of a tire-place provided with side dues and a flue at the back opening below and at the rear of the grate, with a grate composed of a back pivoted in the sides of the fire-place, and having an extension which covers the upper opening of the back flue, and a front which is hooked upon supports in the wall of the fireplace, and the lower bar of which engages a hook on the back, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
T. R. HOUSTON.
Witnesses A. E. HARDAWAY, J. D. SHEPPARD.
