PATENT OrEIcE.
ISAAC S. HOPKINS, OF OXFORD, GEORGIA.
POCKET-SCALES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed September 23, 1880.
Patent No. 241,363, dated May 10, 1881.
(Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ISAAC SrILEs HOPKINS, of Oxford, in the county of Newton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Scales, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a side View of the scale-pan and its hinged bail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish pocket-scales designed especially for physicians practicing in the country and in small towns, where it is necessary for them to carry and weigh out their medicines, for family use in weighing; medicine, and for prescriptions and other delicate weighing, which shall be si mplein construction, capable of being packed in small compass, and convenient in use.
The invention consists in constructing a pocket-scales of a base, a detachable standard having at its upper end a slot, V shaped notches, and guard-projections, a scale-beam having an arm and two knife-edged cross-pins, a scalepan having a hinged bail and a slotted suspension -hook, the screw and weight for raising center of gravity, the screw and balancing-weight, and the sliding counterpoise, the whole adapted to be readily taken apart and packed in small compass for convenient carriage, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A is the base or foot of the scales, which is made ot'such a size and weight as to give a staple support to the scales. In the center of the base A is formed a screw-hole, into which is screwed the lower end of the post or standard B. In the upper end of the standard l3 is formed a slot to receive the beam C.
To the beam 0 is attached a short upwardlyprojecting arm, I), through the upper end of which is passed a knife-edged cross-pin, E. The knife-edges of the cross-pin E rest in V- shaped notches in the slotted upper end of the standard B, which notches and cross-pin are covered and protected by projections F, formed upon the upper end of the standard 13 and projecting over the said notches, space being left beneath the ends of the said projections to allow the cross-pin E to be conveniently inserted in and removed from the said notches.
To the end of the short arm of the beam 0 is attached a cross-pin, G, having knife-edges upon the upper side of its ends to receive the slotted hook II, attached to the center of the bail I. The ends of the bail I are hinged to the opposite edges of the scalepan J, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that the bail I, when detached from the beam 0, can be turned down, as shown in Fig. 3, for convenience in packing.
1n the upwardly-projecting arm D is fixed a screw, N, upon which is screwed a weight, 0, for raising the center of gravity, so as to increase the delicacy of the instrument.
Upon the end of the long arm of the scalebeam 0 is formed a screw, K, upon which is screwed a balancing-weight, IJ. Upon the long arm of the scale-beam O is placed the counterpoise M, which slides upon the said arm to adjust it to weigh or balance any desired quantity, A scale of division-marks is formed upon the upper edge or the side of the long arm of the beam 0.
With this construction the scales can be taken apart and packed in a very small case,
so that it can be conveniently carried.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I 1. A pocket-scales constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the base A, the detachable standard 13, having at its upper end a slot, V -shaped notches, and guard-projections, the scale-beam O, hav' ing arm I) and knife-edged cross-pins E G, the scale-pan J, having hinged bail I and slotted hook H, the screw N and center-of-gravity weight O, the screw K, the lmlancing-weight l1, and the counterpoise M,-the whole adapted to be readily taken apart and packed in small compass for carriage, as set forth.
2. In a pocket-scales, the scale-pan J, constructed with a hinged bail, I, and a slotted hook, I-l, substantially as herein shown and described, the whole adapted to be readily detached from the scale-beam and folded, as set forth.
ISAAO STILES HOPKINS.
