UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY M. DUBURN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,127, dated May 10, 1881. Application filed May 3, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY M. DUBURN, of Cincinnati,Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement comprises a lantern-base composed of a sheet-metal shell and a wooden core or filling having metallic spurs, as hereinafter described; also, in combining with a reservoir having studs and a base a plinth or lower hoop having a notched and contracted lower margin and an enlarged and perforated upper portion, as hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing represents, partly by elevation and partly by vertical section, a lantern embodying my invention.
I provide my lantern with a composite base,
' terior finish, while the wooden filling afi'ords at a small expense solidity and weight to the lower part of the lantern, and prevents any denting or disfigurement of the base.
Permanently attached to the base A is a reservoir, D, provided with any desired burner, E.
Projecting from opposite sides of reservoir D, near its lower portion, and on opposite sides of it,-are studs F. (One shown.)
G is a customary glass chimney, supported in the beaded upper margin, 71, of the hoop or plinth H, of considerably greater diameter than reservoir D, except at its lower edge, h, where it closely encircles it. The lower edge, It, has two opposite notches, 7L, (one sl1own,) which permit the hoop H to be pushed down over the pins or studs F. This having been done, the larger diameter of the uppor portion ot' the hoop permits it to be partially rotated to the position indicated in the drawing, so as to hold it securely upon the base.
The annular interstice I between the reservoir D and the upper portion of the hoop H, in conjunction with orifices h in the hoop, admits currents of draft-air to support the combustion.
Attached to the upper part of the hoop is a wire guard, J, whose intersecting wires are halved to each other, as at j, and then soldered. The notches j guide the Workman in accurately fitting the vertical and horizontal lines together, so as to produce any number of perfectly sym metrical and similar guards with but little care or labor on his part, and when soldered together the members may be flush with each other, so as to present a neatappearance. The component pieces being notched by the same punch, the solderer is atliberty to pick any vertical or horizontal piece out of a pile, with the certainty of its fitting its fellows, each ring or horizontal wire being held to its proper level by the vertical wires, and each vertical wire to its proper position by the horizontal wires.
The dome or upper hoop, K, embraces the top of the chimney, where its spring yoke or latch L is engaged under the upper rail of the guard, in the manner shown in the figure; but on disengagement of -'said latch the dome springs away from the chimney, and then the latter can be removed, if desired.
The latch L aft'ords an object whereto the handle M may be attached, as represented.
The notches j may be formed, anumber of them simultaneously, by punching.
Fora spring-bottom lantern, in which the base slips over the body or hoop, such base may be of annular form.
I am aware that lanterns have been constructed having sheet-metal bases with castmetal rim or bushing, as shown in patent to WVestlake, No. 102,896, and consequently I do not claim, broadly, a composite base.
I claim as new and of my iuvcntion.
1. The composite lantern-base composed of the sheet-metal shell A a and the wooden core or filling 13, having metallic spurs O, as and for the purpose set forth. 2. In combination with the reservoir D,having the studs F, the base A and plinth H, having the notched and contracted lower margin, It, and enlarged and perforated upper portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
' ANTHONY M. DUBURN. Attest:
