Description
(No Model.) L.- SCHNEIDER. Sash T1ghtener No. 241,072. Patented May 3, I88I.-
NITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS SCHNEIDER, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,072, dated May 3, 1881,
Application led March 3], 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs SCHNEIDER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Adjusting Sash- 'Iighteners 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters or figures ot' reference marked thereon, which t'orm a part of this specitication.
Figure l is a perspective, showing the present invention applied to use. Fig. 2 shows the several parts or pieces ot' which the tightener is composed; Fig. 3, vertical central section ot' the roller, &c.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, cheap, strong, self-adjusting windowsash tightener; and the novelty consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts, and in their combination together' to form the present device, all, as will now be more fully set out.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotes any window-sash stile having a mortise or socket, a, on the edge of said stile, of suitable shape and size to contain the tightener. This socket is open on one side at a', to allow the tightener to operate against the guide-strip r. The plate B of the tightener is secured in the socket a by means of a bolt or screw, b, through its upper end, and will thus be capable ot' a swinging motion on said bolt or screw as a pivot. 1n the body of said plate is a boss or post, b', on which the roller C, having a central opening, c, tits, so that it can rotate freely, also,
of course, having a swinging motion from plate B, on which it is secured. To this swinging plate B, and so as to be above and free from the roller C, is secured a socket, D, to hold the reversible spring E.
When, now, the device is thus made and applied to use, the spring E, acting against the walls of the socket a, will serve to press out the plate B, and thus carry the roller U against the guide-strip, and in this way. ett'ectually prevent the sash from rattling, and exclude air and dust.
1tl desired, the periphery ofthe roller G may be flanged on its outer edge, and have upon it and inside ot' the said ange a rubber or antifrictionband, D,assl1ownin Figz. Thespring E will fit into either side ot' the seat D, and the spring' can easily and quickly be inserted in said seat so as to come on either side ofthe roller, and thus the device may be readily applied in a right or left hand socket.
As thus made and constructed the device is simple, strong, readily applied, and most etticient in its operations.
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A window-sash tightener composed of the following' elements or parts, viz: the pivotal plate 13, having a boss, b, the spring-socket D, roller C, andreversible spring E, all constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence oi' two witnesses.
LOUIS SCHNEIDER.
