2 Claims.
This invention relates to stool seats and has for its purpose the provision of a seat which may readily be spun or drawn from sheet metal or similar sheet materials.
An object of the invention is to provide a stool seat which is made of two telescoping stampings which may be assembled and disassembled so that the seat portion of the stool may be replaced or refinished from time to time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stool seat with telescoping members and a third securing member which will prevent the spreading or collapsing of the telescoped members under excessive loads.
The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will be more readily apparent from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a stool seat of this invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section of the stool seat shown in Figure 1 taken on the line 22 of Figure l; and
Figure 3 is a modified form of the stool seat in which the upper member of the seat is constructed in two parts.
Referring to the drawing, in Figure 1 is shown a stool seat of this invention mounted upon the conventional pillar or support it] which is secured to the lower member I! by means of the flange I2 and the bolts I3.
The lower member II is pressed, drawn or spun from a sheet of metal or suitable plastic material into the form indicated by Figure 1 and the fragmentary sections in Figures 2 and 3, which is generally cylindrical and shallow. The bottom plate M is rolled to form the side wall 5 with a peripheral flange it running about the body. Above the flange the side wall I1 is brought in beyond the limits of the lower porslightly concave upper surface 23 to render it more comfortable in use.
In Figure 3 is shown a modified form of the invention in which the upper seat member H8 is made so as to furnish a base for a top I23 which may be composed of sponge rubber, plastic or synthetic composition or any other suitable material, secured to the base member H8 by suitable adhesives or in any other conventional manner. In this modified form the seat member I23 is readily replaceable, if substitution because of wear is desired or in the event that a different seat member is desired to change the ornamental or decorative effect.
The seat member is assembled merely by placing the upper member l8 over the lower member H after the ring 22 has been placed about the side wall 2| of the upper member. The three parts can then be pressed together, and the assembly thus completed.
To disassemble the device, the flange 20 can be pried above the ring 22 and the upper memher I!) then lifted clear of the stool. This pertion l5 of the side wall so as to telescope within the seat member H8. The seat member I8 is formed substantially like the bottom member I! with the side wall l9, annular flange Z0 and the lower side wall 21, which is sufficiently larger in diameter, to closely embrace the upper side Wall ll of the lower member I I.
In order to prevent the spreading of the upper member when the parts are telescoped and under load, an annular retainer ring 22 is slipped over the joint of the two side wall members 21 and II. This will not only furnish the strength necessary to prevent spreading of the parts but will also conceal the joint of the two seat members and ornament the finished seat.
The seat member 18 is formed suitably with a mits the ready substitution of worn members or members that have been dilferently decorated to employ the seat to its full ornamental possibilities.
While two embodiments of the invention have been shown and. described in detail herein, it Will be understood that these are illustrative only and are not intended as a definition of the scope of the invention, reference being had for this purpose to the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A stool seat comprising a lower member in substantially the form of a flat cylinder and an upper member in substantially the form of a flat cylinder, each of said cylinders having a peripheral flange near one end thereof, one of said cylinders having one end thereof open, the other of said cylinders having a portion thereof sufliciently smaller in diameter to be telescoped within said open end, and a band to encircle the portions of said cylinders between the flanges.
2. A stool seat comprising a lower member in substantially the form of a flat cylinder and an upper member in substantially the form of a flat cylinder, each of said cylinders having a peripheral flange near one end thereof, one of said cylinders having one end thereof open, the other of said cylinders havin a portion thereof sufiiciently smaller in diameter to be telescoped within said open end, and a band encircling the telescoped portions of the cylinders and supporting the upper flange upon the lower flange.
EDWARD L. FURBISI-I.
