Description

J. W. &'L. BATSON Cultivator.
No 24,089. I Patented May 24,,v .1859.
J. W. BATSON AND LEONARD BATSON, OF GLARKSVILLE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN CU'LTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,089, dated May 24, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN' W. BATSON and LEONARD BATSON, of Olarksville, in the county of Howard and State of Maryland, have invented anew and useful Improvementin Flows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom panyin g drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, the same making a part of this specification. I
In the said drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a shovel'plow, showing our improvement applied thereto. Fig.2 is a transverse section through the standard of the forward shovel, showin gin section, also, the shovel and shovel-point, which are secured thereto.
The same letters of reference refer to the same parts in both figures.
To enable others skilled in the construction of plows to make and use our invention, We will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A is the ordinary straight cultivatorrplow beam of the common shovel-plow. B B represent the handles.
0 and D are the standards, to which are secured the shovels E and F by means of bolts or screws 0 c and mortises b b, through which pins pass into the standards.
a a are stay-rods for strengthening the connection of the standard to the beam A.
F is a shovel-point applied to the shovel E on standard 0. This shovel-point is made reversible on the shovel, so that when one point becomes dulled or broken the point F may be reversed.
If is a concave point applied in a similar" manner to the shovel E. This point following in the rear and-slightly to one side of the furrow made by the point I it is unnecessary that a cutter should be applied to it. with the four points 0 0 o 0, each of which may be used in turn for entering the ground as thefothers become worn and dulled by use, thus combining these four points in a compact and economical form. This shovel-point H is made somewhat in the diamond shapethat is to say,the distance is greater between thepoints 0 and 0 than between the points 0 and o. This is made so in order that the points 0 and 0 may be first used, and when these become dulled and worn away the points 0 and 0 will be left in the proper form for use.
We do not claim broadly the use of a reversible shovel-point, such having been before used; but
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the reversible concave shovel-point H, reversible shovel-point F and its cutter G, with beam A and standards 0 and D, the whole being constructed and applied in the l manner described, for the purpose specifiet -J. W. BATSON.
