Description

(ModeL) .J. E. LINDSEY. Cotton Chopper.
Patented April 26 N. PETERS, Photoiilhogmpher, Washir ugion. no.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
JAMES E. LINDSEY, OF ELMO, TEXAS.
COTTON-CHOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 240,598, dated April 26, 18811.,
Application filed October 12, 1880.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. LINDSEY, of Elmo, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Choppers; and I do hereby declare that thefollowin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accom panyin gdrawings,whicl1 form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cottonchopper embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
This invention has relation to cotton-choppers; and it consists in the improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the transverse perforated axle, and B B end blocks adjustably secured thereto by bolts or screws, and G0 the rearwarclly-projecting arms, which form the bearings for the supportingwheels D D.
E E designate the choppers or cultivators, secured to the curved standards F, fixed to the under side of the axle A. The axle A is prdvided with. holes, so that the choppers or cultivatorsn ay be adjusted thereon to bring them nearer together or place them farther apart, as may be desired, to change the implement from a chopper to a marker or cultivator. The end blocks may also carry teeth or plows, and may be adjusted on the axle. The wings of the choppers E have vertical upwardly-extending flanges G, to prevent the portion of cotton removed from falling on that which is to remain.
(ModeL) rack, O, secured to the axle A at one side of the beams H.
By operating the lever N the choppers or plows, as the case may be, may be thrown in or out of the ground at pleasure.
The construction and operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It is simple and inexpensive, and may be readily changed from a cotton-chopper to a cultivator by simply adjusting the plows.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a cotton-chopper, the axle A, provided with adjustable end blocks, B, having rearwardly-projecting arms 0 G, forming bearings for wheels D, the plows or choppers E, adjustable to or from each other on the axle, the parallel beams H, and pivoted tongue 1, provided with crank L, lever N, and rack O, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
