Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER H. BAKER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
PADLOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,572, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed July 9,1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER H. BAKER, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Padlock, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a padlock of compact and convenient form having a spring-lock not easily picked, and requirin g a key of special construction to open it.
My padlock consists of two curved or semicircular pieces hinged together at one end and fitted at the opposite ends with a tongue and spring-tumbler locking mechanism, whereby the ends are connected together and require the use of akey to separate them. The two sides form a ring adapted for nse in a manner similar to the hasp of an ordinary padlock.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the padlock in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation with the parts in an unlocked position. Fig. 3, represents details of the lock. Fig. 4 shows the key made use of.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The padlock consists of the two curved or semicircular pieces a 12, connected together bya hinge-pin, c. The end of the piece ais formed with an apertured tongue, 01, for entering the slot 6 in the end of piece I), and when thus entered projects within a recess or chamber that is formed in b, and is caught by the hooked lugs of revolving tumblers f, which are contained within the recess. The tumblers fare in the form of circular disks, with an aperture in the edge of each for the tongue 11 to enter, and with a hook-shaped lug or projection to catch the tongue. Each tumbler is also formed with a concentric key-slot, '5. Two or more tumblers may be used, and they fill the space b tween the ends of the circular recess, one of apart by a spring, m, fitted at the joint, as
shown in Fig. 2. r
The key A (shown in Fig. 4) is formed with a projecting ward, 0, curved crosswise to conform to the slots i of the tumblers, and in a circle of which the pin Z is the center.
To unlock the padlock the ward 0 will be inserted in the slot of plate h, and through the slots '5 of the tumblers, and then turned on its pin 1, to revolve the tumblers and release tongue 01. The hooked lugs of the tumblers cover the slot 0 normally, and they, as well as tongue d, are inclined, so that by pressure the tumblers will be forced back to lock the parts without the key.
This padlock is light, convenient for use, and adapted for carrying in a persons pocket. The locking mechanism is simple and secure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a padlock, the combination of the semicircular oylinders a I), permanently connected at one point of the circle by the hinge-pin c, the part a being provided at its free end with a perforated tongue, d, and the part b recessed at its jointed end for the reception of the spring m, and provided at its other end with a cavity containing the locking-spring t, and an enlarged circular chamber for the tumblers f,
substantially as specified.
PETER HANSON BAKER.
