UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ FRANCIS M. STEWARD, `OF STEWARDS MILL, TEXAS.
ATTACH M ENT TO COTTON-GINS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,559, dated April 26, 188]..
' Application filed March 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. STEWARD, of Stewards Mill, in the county of Freestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Cotton Gins; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable othersv skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin gdrawin gs, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved attachment to cotton-gins, the object of which is to free the gin-saws from any gum, wet cotton, and other obstructions which may adhere to the saws and impede the operation of the machine; and the invention consists of a lever-frame journaled to the gin-frame and carrying a shaft provided with a friction-pulley which may, by will of the operator, be thrown in contact with the driving-pulley of the gin, thus rotating the shaft, which is provided with a set of cleaning-blades ttingbetween the gin-saws between which they are, by the said mechanism, made to revolve rapidly, thus cleaning the said saws and removing such obl structions as are likely to adhere thereto.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved attachment.` Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the blade-carrying shaft, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section. E
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
AAin the drawings represent two shaftsections bolted to a lever, B, so as to form a single shaft, provided at its ends with cranks G C, having bearings D for a shaft, E, provided at its ends adjoining the bearings D with collars F Xed by set-screws G upon the said shaft, so as to prevent anylateral motion or play of the latter in its bearings. The said shaft E is provided with a set or series of transverse blades, H,f1tting between the ginsaws so closely as to bear against or upon the sides of the latter without interfering with their free revolution when in operation.
The shaft A A is journaled in bearings or eyebolts I Iin the gin-frame in such a manner that lateral play ofthe said shaft shall be im possible, and in such a position that by pressing upon the lever B the shaft E shall be raised by means of the cranks G C to such a position that the blades H shallpiit between the gin-saws, and the friction-pulley J, which is iixed upon the shaft E, at a point beyond one of the brackets or bearings, shall bear upon the drivin g-pulley ofithe gin. The shaft E is thus revolved, causing the blades H to revolvebetween the rapidly-rotatin g gin-saws, thus removing from the latter any impurities which may adhere. By releasing the pressure upon the lever B the shaft E drops down out of the way of the gin-saws. y
It may be necessary to slot the gin-frame for thereception of my attachment, so as to enable the same to drop out of the way of the gin-saws, in order not to impede the operation of the latter; but the device is capable of being attached to any gin now in use without regard to its construction.
My invention is simple, convenient, and may be easily and effectuall y operated without stop- V ping the machinery.
Y Having thus described my invention, I claim i and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The herein-described improved attachment for lcotton-gins, consisting of the shaft A A,
having lever B, and cranks C C, provided with Y bearings for a shaft, E, having collars F F, transverse blades H H, and friction-pulley J, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS MARION STEWARD.
