PEN-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GONARD H. SHOWAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pen-Holders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the pen-holder embodying my invention. My invention consists of a pen-holder having within its barrel a plug or head, which, while serving to support and hold the pen, may be automatically ejected, and thus conveniently displace or remove the pen.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the barrel of a pen-holder, and B a plug or head, which is fitted in the barrel at the end to which the pen is applied, the barrel being hollow at said end. In the wall of the hollow portion of the barrel is a longitudinally-extending slot, a, which has an angular extension, a, and to the side of the head B is secured a button,

A portion of the forward end of the plug or head is grooved or cut away, as at b, terminating in a shoulder, 1), to permit the insertion of the shank of the pen between the plug and barrel and hold the pen in operative position. The head is first pushed into the barrel, the pin 0 moving in the slot a, and when the pin reaches the lateral extension of the slot the head is rotated by means of said pin, and the latter enters the extension, whereby the plug is securely inserted, and the pen may then be fitted to the holder.

- When the pen is to be removed the head is rotated by the pin 0, so that the latter emerges from the extension a of the slot at, and is no longer controlled by the wall of said slot at, the spring D then immediately and'forcibly ejecting the head, and with it the pen, whereby the removal of the pen is expeditiously accomplished without application of the fingers to the inky or broken portion thereof. When the pin (3 reaches the end of the slot to the outward motion of the head B ceases, and the head may then be restored within the barrel and another pen applied.

The forward portion of the plug or head is grooved to permit the insertion of the shank of the pen, as has been stated. Rising from said portion at intervals corresponding to the width of the shank of the pen are lips 1), against which the side edges of the shank are in contact or come in contact, when the head B is rotated. These lips separate the grooved portion, so that two or more places are provided for the insertion of a pen, and further render the following important service, viz:

Should the pen be held tightly in position by corrosion, and it require removal, the rotation of the head B carries the pen with it and breaks and loosens the corroded matter, and the ejection or shooting out of the pen is subsequently readily accomplished.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A pen-holder consisting of a barrel and a spring-pressed head which moves therein, said parts holding the pen between them, in

order that the forward movement of the headand pen may free the pen from the head as well as from the shell of the pen-holder.

2. The sliding spring-pressed plug or head B, recessed and shouldered atits forward end, in combination with a barrel,-A, said parts being constructed and arranged to hold the pen between them and against the shoulder of said plug or head B,in order that the forward movement of said head may free the pen from all parts of the pen-holder.
