No. 240,424. Paten ted April 19,1881.
N.PETERS. PNQTO-LITHOGRAPNER, wAsmNG UNITED STATES PATENT OF I E.
JENS JENSEN, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN.
DOUBLE-TREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,424, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed March 18, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ENs JENSEN, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Trees; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan or top view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line xx in Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a rear elevation, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views in perspective.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
This invention has relation to double-trees for wagons and farming implements; and it consists, first, in the combination, with the double-tree, of solid double-looped end bands and detachable clevises; and, second, in the combination, with the double-tree, of a center iron or plate of improved construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A is the doublertree, upon each end of which is affixed. a tightly-fitting oval band, B B, having a rib, b, and a circular shoulder, a a, on opposite sides, which are perfor-ated for the insertion of the bolt 0, by which the band is secured upon the tree. The bands B B are provided at each end with a loop or eye, d d, made in one piece therewith, one of which, (I, is horizontal, while the other (on the rear side ofthe tree) may either be horizontal,
as at d, Fig. l, or set at a right angle to d, as
shown at d Figs. 1 and 2. The horizontalfront loops, d d, are in the nature of ears or flat projections, perforated vertically, with a vertical slot or mortise in one side of the perforation, as shown more clearly at e in Fig. 6. The two ends of the clevis U are formed with similar slotted perforations ff, so arranged that when the clevis is inserted upon its lug and turned at a right angle thereto the slots 0 f will register and allow of the insertion of the feathered bolt D. By then turning the clevis in a line with band B, to which it is at tached, bolt D will be locked in place, with its ribs or feathers g g fitting into the slots or recesses e f, respectively.
The center iron consists of an upper plate, E, and lower plate, E, united at their rear end by a piece, F, made with a horizontal lug (ModeL) or loop, F, perforated for the attachment of a middle clevis in like manner as the end bands, B B. The part or plate E on the under side of the tree is wider than the upper part, E, projecting on both sides of the vertical rear connecting part or plate, F, and both the up per and lower plates, E E, are made larger than the double-tree is wide at its middle, so as to project on the front side thereof, which projecting parts are turned respectively down and up, forming flanges h h, impinging upon the upper and lower front edges of the tree, as represented in Fig.3. The center iron is prevented fro-m lateral displacement by screws or bolts '6 i, and, with the tree, is perforated vertically, as shown at k, for the insertion of the wagon hammer or bolt by which the tree is pivoted upon the tongue.
By the arrangement of the end bands with their loops and clevises, as described, the clevises may be attached to or detached from the double-tree in a few moments without possibility, by my improved mode of fastening, of becomingaccidentally detached; and when the tree is used with heavy wagons stay-chains, connecting the tree with the fore axle, may be fastened in the rear loops or eyes, d 01 Having thus described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The solid ribbed and shouldered end bands, B B, provided with perforated lugs or eyes 01 d at opposite ends, in connection with the nutted bolts 0 c and double-tree A, substantially as shown and specified.
2. The combinatiomas described, of the double-tree A, provided with solid ribbed and shouldered end bands, B B, having perforated and slotted lugs 01 d, vertical feathered bolts D D,and horizontal clevises G 0, having notched or slotted perforations ff, substantially as set forth.
3. In connection with the double-tree A, the centeriron, composed of an upper narrow plate, E, lower wide plate, E, vertical connectingplate F, provided with the projecting perforated lug F, and front flanges, h h, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JENS JENSEN.
