W P- No. 240,354.. Patented ApriI19, 1881.
DZineg;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. ALLEN, OF CANYON CITY, OREGON.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,354, dated April 19, 1881. Application filed November 27. 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. ALLEN, of Canyon City, in the county of Grant and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snake-WVhips; and I do hereby declarethat the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
' which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved snakewhip filling, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same.
This invention contemplates improvements in that class of whips termed snake-whips, having for its objectto combine, with the requisite flexibility, strength and durability; and it consists in an improved filling or core for whips, consisting of a tapering tube or hollow core, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the construction or manufacture of whips the core or filling has heretofore been made of leather or twisted strands of reed or rattan. The first is objectionable because of its too-yieldin g nature or excessive flexibility, and if, by selecting extra leather filling, this disadvantage is avoided, it will only be temporary. The second is undesirable in that it is liable to break too readily or easily, and thus, in both instances,
require constant renewal to enable the whip to retain the proper yielding quality or flexibility with a certain amount of elasticity; or if this course is not followed the whip soon loses its symmetry and more or less of its usefulness.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A is the filling or core, which is made of india-rubber, tapering longitudinally, and hollow or tubular about one-third of its length, while its exterior is made rounding. This form of filling or core inserted in a whip gives it the combined requisite flexibility, with a greater or less amount of elasticity, with the desired strength and durability, enabling it to possess its symmetry and usefulness until worn out.
I am aware that it is not new to provide tubular sections in the manufacture of whips. This I do not claim.
By my improvement the rubber core is made hollow for only a portion of its length at the thick or handle end, thus combining the qualities ofstrengtlnlightness, and flexibility, while the handle end, being comparatively yielding, readily adapts itself to the gripe of the hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent. of the United Statesi A whip filling or core made of india-rubber in a tapering or conical shape and hollow at its thick or handle end for about one-third of its length, as shown, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. ALLEN.
