AIR-PURIFv-ING` APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,320, dated April 19, 1881.
Application led September 27, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN F. MnLLINcxRoDT, of Denver,in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Purifying Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which I have represented a vertical section of my apparatus.
My invention relates to devices for purifying the air mechanically by absorbing line dust and sand with which it may be interiningledas, for example, in quartz-mills, powder-mills, or to take up the sand and dust from the air as it is sucked into the air-pump of the airbraltes on railway-trains.
To this end it consists in the detailed con struction and combination of parts ot' a box or closed air-receptacle of suitable size, which is adapted to be partially filled with water and provided with a series of inclined shelves and two screens, with an intermediate layer of sponge or similar material, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A iswthe box or airreceiver, which has the inclined shelves B1G D, arranged as shown. The lower part of the box is filled with water or other suitable liquid, as shown at E, so as to cover the lowermost shelf,-wliich is provided with rake-like teeth a a on its under side. This shelf does not, as the uppershelves, project from the side (or, rather, end) of the box, but from a partition, B', which extends down into the box from the upper shelf, so as to leave an air-space, b, opposite to the air-inlet F, in one end of the box.
In the upper part of the box, upon cleats g g, is placed `a frame provided with two wire screens, G Gabetween which is confined a layer of sponge or similar porous material, H. The4 upper p'art of the box should have a door or l slide, through which this screen-frame or lter may be removed, when desired, for cleaning it, reversing it, or for other purposes. Above the frame, in the roof of the box, is the air-outlet I.
When this apparatus is used in a quartz-mill l the air and quartz-dust with which it is intermingled are exhausted from themill by av Sturtevant or other suitable blower and forced through the purifier, as indicated by the arrows. On locomotive-engines the purifier is placed under the inlet ot' the air-pump, so that all' air entering` the pump must first pass through the purifier. Thus grit and sand is prevented from entering the pump and brake mechanism, where it cuts and wears the pistous and packing, making frequent repairs nece essary, and otherwise causing both trouble and expense.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The described apparatus for purifying air mechanically, composed ot' a box, A, adapted to be partially filled with water and provided with an inlet, F, above the water-level and outlet I on top, inclined shelf B, having downward-extending partition B opposite to the inlet F and extending below the water-level,
to form the air-chamber or ante-chamber b, inclined shelf D, projecting from partition B below the water-level, and having teeth a, shelf O, projecting from the opposite end of box A, between shelves B D,.and removable and reversible lter G H G, arranged in the top of the box, below the outlet I, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
