i IMPROVEMENT IN FLOUR-BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,525, dated December 28, 1875; application filed May 31, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concm'n Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MERRITT, of Bardolph, in the county of McDonough and State of lllinois, have invented va new and useful Improvement in Flour-Purifiers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the construction of suitable machinery for both purifying and eooling at the same time the flour before it is sists in arranging a cylinder above the boltling-chest, provided with an exhaust air-blast,
as hereinafter described.
ln the drawing, A A represent the frame of the bolting-chest, on top of which is placed the cylinder H, which consists of a center shaft fitted into suitable frame-work at each end. This shaft has cross-arms, to which the ribs I I are attached. At the left these ribs angle inwardly to the shaft. The covering is made of heavy canvas and oiled. The angles aa are open. B B represent the bolts in the chest. D 'represents the lineshaft, which gives motion to the bolts B B and cylinder H by means of the bevel-wheels 8 8 8. E represents the fan-blower shaft, to which the fans J J are attached. O represents the suctionpipe leading from the cylinder H to the fanv blower.
The operationiis as follows: The nnbolted fiour is elevated and introduced into the cylinder H at the spout d. Motion is applied t'o the shaft D, which givesmotion to the bolts B B and cylinder H, and motion is also applied to the fan-blower. As soon as the cylinder H commenoes to revolve it commences to agitate theflour by raising it up the sides, and pouring it down again, which is done by means of the ribs I 1, which extend inwardly for that purpose. The agitation of the fiour in the cylinder sets Vfree all the light and fine particles of bran and other impurities. The suction force from the fan-blo'wer draws afcurrent of air through the cylinder by means of and through the pipe G, indicated by the ar? clined to the left, which causes the flour, by
means of gravitation to 'run that way, and as fast as it runs out of the cylinder it passes out into the spout r, and down into the upper bolt cooled and thoroughly cleansed of all the impurities that would otherwise go into the fine flour.
I am aware that devices have been constructed and used for cleansin g middlings by means of an air-blast, and also that tlour has been subjected to currents of air for the purpose of cooling it; but I am not aware that fiour has been both cooled and purified at the same time before being introduced into the bolt, as set forth in theforegoing specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of inclined superposed cylinder H, and pipe O, with the first and second grade bolts B B, and the ezghaust'fan, substantially as described, and. for the purpose set forth.
