GRAVITY WATER-FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,846, dated August 15, 1899.
Application filed April 26, 1899. Serial No. 714,523. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT J. BLISS, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GravityWater-Filters;and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gravity-filters; and the object is to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and capacity of the filter.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and-particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved filter. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the bottom face of the filter-stone. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the cleaner-stone.
A denotes the filtered-water reservoir, and B the filter-chamber, in which the water to be filtered is placed.
C denotes the filter-block, which consists of trip'oli or any other suitable porous stone, and it is formed with a central orifice c and with a vertical series of parallel pockets cc, extending from the bottom face of the stone to within a short distance of the top, and the lower ends of the pockets are connected byacontinuous gutter 0 which in turn communicates with the central orifice c by means of the radial gutters 0 0 D denotesa central pipe extending through the filter, and it is provided with a collar cl to support the plate (1', which forms a cover for the gutters c 0 and which is cemented to the bottom of the filter-stone to form a joint at this point.- The threaded end of the pipe is closed by a blind nut d and the pipe is provided with an IIlIBiFOIIfiOG for the filtered water, and the lower end of the pipe terminates in an S-trap at, extending to within a short distance of the bottom of the reservoir A. This pipe acts by suction and serves to draw the water from the filter-stone and thereby increase the capacity of the filter.
E denotes the cleaner-stone, mounted in the sheet-metal casing 6, so as to have an exposed edge, as shown, and the casings are connected by the frame-handles e e for conveniently manipulating the cleaners, which is done by reciprocating them, accompanied by moderate friction, over the outside walls of the filter-block to detach the solid matter which has been separated from the water and which'accumulates on the outside of the porous filter-block. In practice I prefer to use a natural-stone filtering medium and a similar cleaner; but I do not wish to confine myself to natural stone for these elements, as it is evident that any suitable unglazed pottery or similar porous manufactured material may be used in lieu thereof.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end 'of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The porous-stone filter-block 0, formed with the vertical parallel pockets 0' c, the continuous gutter 0 the radial gutters c and the central orifice c in combination with the outlet-pipe D, formed with the trap 11,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination With the reservoir A,
the superimposed filter-chamber B, and the filter-block 0, provided with the central orifice c, of the pipe D terminating in the trap (1 the blind nut (1 the collar cl and the cover plate (1, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
- DWIGHT J. BLISS.
