Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN SQUIRES AND ELISHA B. SQUIRES, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
, OYSTER-TRANSPORTATION CAN.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,281, dated April 19, 1881. Application filed August 30, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALVIN SQUIRES and ELISHAB. SQUIRES, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oyster-Transportation Cans, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where Figure l is a central vertical section. 2 is a top View of the inner can. Fig. 3 is a side view of same. Fig. 4. is a side View from the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the side and lid of the outer case.
The apparatus is designed for use in the transportation of oysters, keeping them refrigerated the while.
The letter a denotes an outer wooden casing or tub; I), the cover thereof; 0, a rubber gasket to keep the joining tight; (1, nuts to secure the cow! in place, taking upon the bolts 6, which, fast to the tub a, rise through holes in cover I) to receive the nuts.
The letter f denotes an inner metallic can for holding the oysters, with a space between it and the tub a to hold refrigerating material. 9 denotes steadyin'g-blocks fixed to the inside of the tub to hold the top of the can from swaymg.
Fig.
The letter h denotes the lid or cover of the can, bearing a laterally-extending pintle, i, taking into the loop j, fixed to the can, this to form a hinge which permits the bodily removal of the lid. k denotes a hasp taking upon the staple I, thus permitting the lid h to be locked on by'a padlock.
The letter m denotes a set-screw runnin through the bottom of the can into the bottom of the tub, and holding can and tub securely together.
'n denotes a rubber packing-ring, which may be inside or outside the can, to keep tight the hole through which screw m passes.
We claim as our invention- 1. In combination, the tub a, the C3.l1f,-1tll6 screw m, and the packing n, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The tub a, provided with bolts 0 and steady-blocks g, the cover I) and nuts d, the can f, provided with loop j and staple l, the lid h, provided with pintle 2' and hasp k, the set-screw m, and the packing n, all combined substantially as described.
