Description
PATENT FFICE.
MORGAN W. BROWN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ART OF ORNAMENTING THE SURFACES 0F BOXES, PACKAGES, &c.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 240,228, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed February 17, 1880.
. the object of the invention being to render the surface so treated, or to which the foil and gelatine or isinglass have been applied, more attractive, and to give to it a sparkling appear-.
ance.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the manner of carrying out the same.
I first take the tin or other metallic foil and break or press the surface of it into a rough, uneven, or corrugated shape. The foil in this condition is then affixed to or upon the surface to be ornamented or decorated. 1 then place or affix over the surface of corrugated or roughened foil a sheet of gelatiueor isinglass,
the result being, as before stated, to render the surface decorated attractive to the eye, a sparkling appearance being produced by the light that passes through the gelatine or isinglass and is reflected by the corrugations of the foil.
It will be seen that if plain gelatine or isinglass be employed foils of different colors can be employed advantageously, greatly increasing the effect sought to be produced, or that a like result can he arrived at by the employment of ordinary tin-foil used in connection with colored or partly-colored sheets of gelatiue or isin glass.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is The within-described process for ornamenting or, decorating surfaces, which consists in affixing to the surface a body of roughened or corrugated tin or other metallic foil, and then placing over the same a sheet of plain-colored or partly-colored gelatine or isin glass, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
MORGAN W. BROWN.
