Substituted for abandoned application Serial No.
329,976, April 16, 1940. This application January 4, 1946, Serial No. 639,005
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to stoves and ranges and more particularly the tops thereof.
The present application is a substitute for the prior application Serial No. 329,976, filed April 16, 1940.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a stove or range of such construction that the conventional tops thereof can be eliminated so as to reduce the cost of manufacture and minimize the time and labor in assembling the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide a stove or range having certain sections and adjuncts thereof constructed to form a top.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a stove or range having the upper areas of its doors constructed to form a portion of the top thereof.
Another salient feature of thi invention resides in the particular construction of the side sections and doors so as to permit them to be enameled or decorated prior to assemblage.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim and, while this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction and arrangement of elements as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a stove or range constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of the front portion of the stove taken approximately on line 22 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken approximately on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the end doors observed from the inner face thereof.
Fig. 7 is a similar view of the center door.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a stove or range which, among the elements and adjuncts cornmonly used in constructing the same. consists of a rear section 6, a front section 1 having openings 8 therein for access to the interior of the stove, side sections 9, and a bottom 9' all of which are bolted or otherwise secured together to form the body of the stove or range, the same being adapted to support a single top plate or plates l 0 having openings ll herein to accommodate removable cover plates l2 of the usual character.
Hingedly disposed over the openings 8 in the front section I are side doors I 3 and a center door l3 having their upper areas l4 directed inwardly preferably on arcuate lines so as to form the front portion of the top of the stove, the said sections 9 being similarly directed inwardly as at M to complete the top of the stove, said in wardly directed areas have their outer surfaces merged into the plane occupied by the top surface of the top plate or plates 10 to provide a smooth and neat finish to the stove. The side doors 13 are connected to the side edge. of the front section I by hinges I3 so as to swing sidewise on perpendicular axis while the center door I3 is connected at its lower edge to said front section by hinges I l so as to swing downwardly on a horizontal axis between the side doors l3.
Formed on the inner upper edges of the side sections 9 are ledges l5 which together with similar ledges l6 formed on the front and rear sections provide supports for the top plate or plates l0, it being optional with the manufacturer to reinforce all sections, including the doors, with ribs or the like usually employed for such purposes.
The doors and side sections, While herein shown as being of plain castings, may be formed with openings or the like as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 6 and 'l for reception of panels, dampers or other adjuncts usually employed in manufacturing stoves and ranges. Y In that the salient feature of this invention resides in the particular construction of the upper areas of the doors and certain sections of the stove or range to form the top thereof, it is within the purview of the invention to practice it wherever found expedient.
With this invention fully set forth, it is manifest that means have been provided whereby conventional tops of stoves and ranges can be eliminated, the cost of manufacture reduced to the minimum and, through the simplicity of construction of the same, assemblage of the sections thereof can be performed in a short time without the use of special tools.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In a stove, a flat top plate having a downwardly extending front flange, side walls having their upper edges curved to merge smoothly into the 3 top plate, a front section having its upper edge resting against the flange and terminating in spaced relation below the upper surface of the top plate, said front section having a central door opening and a pair of lateral door openings, doors normally covering said openings, the center door -beinghinged at its bottom; and the other doors being; hingedat the sides remote vfrom the center door, said doors when closed forming a smooth and unbroken front surface, the upper edge of each of said doors being curved towards and abutting the edge of the top plate whereby the outer face of the top portions of the doors merge smoothly into the upper face of the top plate, the curved portions of the doors restin JESSE J.
