This-invention has for its object to provide improved means for" eifecting. the priming of gasoline and like engines.
The invention consists ina priming arrangement. for gasoline and. like engines comprising, in combination, a. fuel tank, a float controlled fuel inlet; to such tank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve for controlling the delivery from said tank, a sprayer receiving fuel from said tank past said valve, a compressed airsupply pipeto said tank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve for controlling the supply of compressed air to and. the ventin of said tank, a switch for closing an electric circuit. including a holdon coil for the switch and the windings of the said electro, magnetically controlled. valves, a
normally closed make and break-device in said' circuit, bellows operated means for opening said device to break the circuit, and acapsule warmed by theengine to cause the bellows to open. the
make andbreak. device. when; the engine temperature reaches a predetermined. minimum.
by the. floatv e to controlitheflow of fuel intothe tank. Theoutflow from thelatter to-the priming Sprayers f is controlled by the valve g which constitutes a solenoid core and israised to allow fuelqto. flow from thetank a to the sprayers 1 when electric currentis passed. through. the winding h. The valve is closed by the spring 2' whenthe winding-.71.: isde-energised.
The expulsion oii-tuelfrom the tank ais efiected.
by air pressure applied through the pipe 7 and controlled by the valve k which. constitutes a The invention further consists in a priming arrangement for gasoline and. like engines comprising, in combination. a fuel tank, a float controlled fuel inlet to such tank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve for controlling the delivery from said tank, a sprayer receiving fuel from said tank past said valve, a compressed air supply pipe to said tank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve for controlling the supply of compressed air to and the venting of said tank, a switch for closing an electric circuit including a hold-on coil for the switch and the windin s of the said electro-magnetically controlled valves, a normally closed make and break device in said circuit, bellow operated means for opening said device to break the circuit, and a capsule heated by a coil in the circuit to cause the bellows to open the make and break device when the circuit has been closed for the time requisite to warm the capsule to a predetermined extent.
The invention further consists in the arrange ment of two capsules, one warmed by the engine being primed and the other warmed by current in the electric circuit for opening the make and break device.
The accompanying explanatory diagram gives a lay-out of a priming arrangement in accordance with this invention.
a is the priming fuel tank into which fuel flows by gravity or under a slight pressure through the branch b which has a non-return valve 0 therein. There is a valve (1 controlled solenoid core and is raised to allow compressed air, to passto.= the tank when. the winding. m is energised. Whemthe valve I0 is raised and open, the other and n or the core acts as a venting valve. andtcloses the connection to atmosphereat 0,.the latter serving when the valve is is closed to allow the tank. a-to exhaust toatmosphere as it is;filling.. A spring; p serves-to close thevalve it when the winding m is. deeenelgised.
The. electric circuit which includes the windings h and 122, also includes a hold-on coil q for the push button switch r, the latter when depressed closing. the. contacts; 5. and: t in. thecircuit which includes the hold-on coil q, the windings h and m and a make-and-break device u. Normally the make-and-break device i closed and a plunger 11 which serves to open such device and break the electric circuit is retained clear thereof by the bellows w. The space :1; around the bellows w and the capsules 1! and z in communication with the space a: contain a suitable high expansion fluid.
The capsule z is placed against a suitable part 2 of the engine 'being primed so that it is influenced by engine temperature and the capsule y is wound with a heating coil 3 in the electric circuit so that it is heated proportionately to the time that the circuit has been closed. When therefore the engine temperature exceeds a predetermined minimum or the circuit has been closed for such a time that the coil 3 becomes suiiiciently heated, the capsule w will be compressed by the high expansion fluid and will by the plunger "0 open the make-and-break device u, so breaking the electric circuit and de-energising the coils h, m and q. The valves 12 and e will then be closed, and the push button switch opened by the spring 1 As shown, the push button switch is open, the windings h and m de-energised and the makeand-break device it closed. Fuel can now flow into the tank a if the level therein is below a predetermined amount.
To cause priming of the engine, the push button r is depressed and closes the contacts s, t so completing the circuit which includes the holdon coil q, the windings m and h and the makeand-break device it.
The atmospheric venevaive n now r ns d and compressed air "enters the float" chamber "a anddelivers priming fuel via the valve e which is open to the sprayers f. If the engine starts, it
will warm the capsule z and thetime that the electric circuit is closed will'cause a warming-of the capsule 1:, which will eventually result in the bellows 10 being compressed and causing the plunger 1: to open the makeand-break device u,
so de-energising the windings a, h and m and restoring the system to its original condition, when the tank a can re-fill. Ifthe engine does not start, the heating of the capsule y will act as a safety means to prevent excessive priming.
the like engines comprising, in combination, a fuel tank, a float controlled fuel inlet to such tank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve for controlling the delivery from said tank, a sprayer rceivingiuelirom said tank past said valve, a compressed air supply pipe to saidtank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve for controlling -the supply of compressed air to and the venting of said tank, a switch for closing an electric circuit including a hold-on coil for the switchand the windings of the said electro-magnetically controlled valves, a normally closed make-andbreak device in said circuit, bellows operated means for opening said device to break the circuit, and a capsule heated by a coil in the circuit to cause the bellows to open the make and break device when the circuit has been closed for the time requisite to warm the capsule to a predeter- The air and fuel valves when closed prevent ling the delivery from said tank, a sprayer're- V ceiving fuel from said tank past said valve, a
. compressed air supply pipe to said tank, an electro-magnetically controlled valve 'for controlling the supply of compressed air to andthe venting of said tank, a switch for closing an electric'circuit including a hold-on 0011 for the switch and the windings of the said electro-magnetically controlled valves, a normally closed make and break device in said circuit, bellows operated means for opening said device to breakthe circuit, and a capsule warmed by the engine tocause the bellows to open the make 'andbreak'device when mined extent.
3. In a priming arrangement as claimed in claim 1, a capsule heated by a coil in the circuit, M also adapted to cause the bellows to open the make and break device when the circuit has been closed for a predeterminedperiod.
4. In a priming arrangement as claimed in claim 1, the construction of the valve for con trolling the flow of compressed air to the fuel tank in which the-valve is a solenoid core, one
end of which controls the flow of compressed air itO the tank and the other end of which'ventsthe tank when the compressed air is cut off. 7
5. In a priming arrangement as claimed in claim 1, the construction of the valve for con-- trolling the delivery from the fuel tank as a s i'solenoid core.
the engine temperature reachesapredetermined minimum.
2 In a priming arrangement for gasoline and f 6. In a priming arrangement as claimed in claim 1, a chamber around the bellows communicating with the capsule, said chamber and cap sule containing a highly expansible liquid, :3. Iiplunger connected to said bellows adapted when the bellows is compressed to engage and open the make and break device.
