This invention relates to improvements in foundation garments and has particular reference to garments in which the back panel comprises an inelastic non-stretchable lower portion which clings closely about the hips and buttocks of the wearer and an elastically stretchable upper portion which permits the back panel to lengthen, contract, and otherwise adjust itself to bending, twisting and other movements of the wearer without causing slippage or displacement of the non-stretchabie lower lportion of said panel.

The object of the present invention is to provide a girdle or other foundation garment of the above mentioned type in which the form-litting and figure-molding eiects of the back panel are enhanced by full-length stilening bones associated with said panel in such manner as to offer no interference to the stretching and contraction of the elastically stretchable upper portion of the panel.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a rear view of a girdle embodying my invention.

Fig 2 is a front view of said girdle.

Fig. 3 is a view showing the inside of the back panel assembly in elevation. This view shows the back panel lining which carries the fulllength stiffening bones and also shows part of the side sections of the girdle to which the lining is secured.

Fig. 4 is a section along the section line 4-4 of Fig. 1.

The girdle shown in the present drawings comprises a front panel 5, side sections 6, a rear panel 1 and a rear-panel lining 8, the latter covering substantially the full length and width of rear panel 1 and being provided with full length stifening bones 9.

The front panel 5 is preferably composed of inelastic material but is provided with an elastic insert I0 which permits stretching and contraction of the lower portion of the panel and contributes to the form-fitting eilect of the garment as a whole. The side sections 6 are preferably, but not necessarily, made of two-way stretch elastic material.

'Ihe rear panel 'I includes an inelastic and non-stretchable lower part I2 which covers and clings closely to the hips and buttocks of the wearer. The upper part of the back panel is generally indicated at I3 and is constructed in a manner which permits the back panel to accommodate itself to `bending Aand other rmovements of the wearers body without causing slippage or other displacement of the lower part I2. As here shown, part I3 comprises two sections designated I4 and I5. Section I4 is made of inelastic material and is formed with a concavely curved lower edge I4a which is sewn to the convexly curved upper edge I5a of section I5. The last mentioned section is made of elastic material capable of .considerable stretch in the vertical direction of the garment and also along diagonal lines inclining upwardly and outwardly from the vertical centre line of the back panel. Section I5 is provided with a lower convex edge I 5b which has the shape of a wide V and is sewn to the complementary, concave V-shaped edge I2a of the lower panel part I2. Section I5 is also shaped so that its upper and lower edges closely approach each other at the ends of the section which are joined to the side sections 6.

By reason of the construction described in the foregoing the upper part I3 of the back panel has essentially the same directional stretch characteristics as the back muscles of the wearers body and is therefore well adapted to accommodate itself to bending, twisting and other movements of the wearer without pulling the lower part I2 out of place.

As previously stated, the lining 8 and fulllength stilening bones 9 enhance the figuremolding and form-fitting effect of the back panel 'I without interfering with the stretching of the upper panel part I3. In this connection it will be noted that the lining is sewn to the upper and lower edges of the lower part I2 of the back panel by lines of stitching indicated at II and I8 and that only those portions of the side edges of the lining which extend from the lower ends of the back panel to points only slightly above the joined edges I4a and I5a of the back panel sections I4 and I5 are secured to the side sections 6 by lines of stitching I9. Except for portions of its side edges, that part of the lining which lies above the line of stitching I'I is free of attachment to the back panel sections I4 and I5. With this method of securing the lining in place there is no interference with the stretching and contraction of the part I3 of the back panel by either the lining or the stiffening bones 9. When the part I3 stretches it moves relatively to the lining 8 and the stiffening bones 9 which are secured to the lower part I2 of the back panel.

and rear panels and side sections joining said panels, said rear panel extending the full-length of the garment and being stretchable in the vertical direction thereof and a full-length nonstretchable lining covering the inside of said rear panel and provided with full-length'stiifening members and means securing said lining and stiffening members in place so that they do not 4 interfere with the stretching and contraction of said rear panel.

2. A foundation garment comprising front and rear panels and side sections joining said panels, the rear panel comprising a non-stretchable lower portion which clings closely about the hips and buttocks of the wearer and an upper portion which is elastically stretchable in the 4vertical direction of the'g'arment, ay full-length non-stretchable lining covering the inside of said rear panel and carrying one or more fulllength non-stretchable stiiening members, the side and lower edges of the lining being sewn in place along the side and lower edges of the rear panel, the upper stretchable portion of the rear panel and the overlying portion of the lining being free 'of attachment to each other except n attheir side edges so that said upper portion of the panel is free to stretch relative to both the lining and the lower portion of said panel.
