This invention relates to improvements in tools and has particular reference to the construction of the handle portions thereof.
An object of the invention is the employment of a novel shape and configuration of a file handle, whereby the le portion of the implement may be easily manipulated due to the ilat surfaces employed in the handle portion.
.A further object of the invention is the provision of novel clamping means for securing the file to the handle portion.
A further object of the invention is the production of a clamping means that is economical to manufacture, simple in construction, positive in operation, strong and durable.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this description and which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a file and a handle therefore constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the clamping frame, the view being taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the file and handle.
File handles as now provided are generally of a rounded configuration, which when gripped are difficult to manipulate to accomplish the desired filing operation or action of the le portion of the implement. In the production of a flat surfaced handle as illustrated in the present invention, I am able to obtain the proper leverage for the following reasons; the concave sides or" the handle afford comfortable gripping surfaces for the palm of the hand and the fingers when severe or intense filing is being done. On the other hand when a delicate ling operation is to be employed, the thumb of the user can readily and comfortably rest on one of the fiat surfaces of the handle and the degree of ling is more readily controlled. Accordingly, there is a distinct contrast and advantage in the use of my type of handle as compared to the conventional round form of iile or tool handle.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral E designates the file portion and the numeral 'I the handle thereof. The le is of the conventional iiat type having two filing surfaces and is equipped with a tang 8 capable of being received in a wedge-shaped slot 9 formed in the handle.
The handle per se is of a square configuration at its inner end, has its medial side portion of a concave configuration as at II and is equipped with a rounded end, thus by virtue of the construetion employed two at surfaces I2 and I3 are provided, each of which may serve as a comfortable and positive support for the thumb of the hand when delicate or lne ling is being accomplished. It is obvious that the concave sides and rounded extremity will alord a comfortable and effective gripping surface when intense ling is being done.
It will be noted that the fiat surface I2 and the surface I3 have shoulders formed .thereon as at Iii and I5. From the shoulder I there are provided spaced ends I6. From the shoulder I5 there is provided a solid extension Il, which is spaced from said ends to provide a recess I8 in communication with the tapered opening 9 formed in the handle. On the inner end of the handle so constructed I apply my clamping means which comprises a substantially rectangularl metal frame that includes a base I9, side walls 2i! and 2| and a top formed by extending the side walls and bending the extensions 22 and 23 downwardly, where said extensions overlap, as disclosed to advantage in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing. To reinforce the top, I propose to solder to the underside of the extension 22, a metallic strip 24. Each of the extensions, as well as the strip, have registered threaded openings 25 therein that receive a machine screw or like fastening element 26 adapted to contact the le and to retain the same against danger of accidental displacement.
To assure a strong firm engagement of the file in the handle I extend the base I9 and bend the same upwardly to provide an extension 21, and likewise continue the side walls of the frame rearwardly to provide tapered extremities 28 and 29 that are capable of being inwardly bent to engage the side of the handle.
Thus the le 6 having its lower surface resting on the extension 2'I and having its tang inserted in the wedge-shaped opening 9, having its upper surface engaged by the machine screw with the additional feature of the extremities 28 and 29 engaging the side of the handle, will be positively and securely locked to the handle against danger of accidental displacement.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material, and arrangement of parts may be re 3 4 sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In combination with a file handle having a at upper and lower surface and a tapered bore for receiving the file therein, of means for securing the file to the handle comprising a metallic casing positioned on extensions of the handle, said casing embodying in its construction a base, side walls and a pair of threaded extensions defining 10 JANIES A.
