Application August 28, 1944, Serial No. 551,538
2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved identification device which is designed to facilitate the locating of the desired receptacle such as the drawer of a filing cabinet. It is particularly designed to enable one to readily and comfortably read the designation on the device without the present difficult stooping and searching, especially in the case of the bottom yor lower drawers of a cabinet.
The invention permits the tilting of the identifying frame or leaf for observation and the-loose hinging of the leaf allows it to drop to vertical position when released.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. In said drawing Figure 1 is a face view of an article embodying thelinvention. Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the article illustrated in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a rear view of a modified form of construction and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
The leaf I is adapted to be lightly hinged at its top edge to a rear leaf I I lby means of the hinge I2, the hinge bein-g usuallyy formed by the knuckles crimped over a pintle I4.
The front leaf Ill is adapted to receive an identification slip usually in the form of a card I5 with the desired index character I6. The leaf is in the form of a frame with the marginal strips Il and has an open top for the easy replacement of cards.
The rear leaf II is adapted to be slid into the name plate frame I8 on the front of a drawer I9 fixed to and carried thereby in the usual type of ling cabinets and replaces the space usually occupied by a card. If desired, the name plate I8 can be removed and the leaf II attached directly to the front of the cabinet drawer, by riveting or other suitable means, The rear leaf I I may be of lesser length than the identiiication card carrying frame I0 in those cases in which the name plate frame I8 of the drawer I9 is of lesser length than the card carrying frame I0 or as indicated in Fig. 4, said rear leaf I I may be of substantially the same length as the identification card carrying frame I0 in those cases in which the name plate frame I8 of the drawer is of the same length as the identification card carrying frame I.
The modification in Figure 3 shows a leaf formed of a lip 20 which is provided with knuckles I3. To this is secured a leaf 2l of cardboard or similar material that can be trimmed to size to lit unusually dimensioned forms of name plate frames.
The utility of the device enables a le clerk to more quickly and comfortably distinguish the proper drawer, especially those in the lower or bottom rows of a cabinet. By lifting the leaf I0 by the finger or in bottom cases by the toes of a shoe, the leaf swings outward and the indicia on the article can be easily read without the stoopingk or squatting now necessary in ling cabinets with drawers near the floor.
When released, the leaf I0 drops down and is suspended vertically from the hinge and is out of the way.
Various changes can be made in the proportion of parts and method of holding the cards without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. An identification device for use in connection with the name plate frame of a drawer, wherein said name plate frame has an opening therein, said identification device comprising two leaf members hinged together at one longitudinal edge, one of said leaves comprising a frame having an open top for the reception of an identification card and marginal strips on said frame to retain the card in the last mentioned frame, the
second leaf comprising a fiat plate adapted for insertion in the opening of the name plate frame, with thevlirst mentioned leaf in hinged suspension, in parallel immediate proximity to the name plate frame, to enable the identification card carrying -frame to be hingedly rotated for facility for reading the identification card therein.
2. An identification device for use in connection with the name plate frame of a drawer, wherein said name plate frame has an opening in the top thereof, said identification device comprising two leaf members hinged together at one longitudinal edge, one of said leaves carrying an identification card, the second leaf comprising a flat plate of such dimensions as to be adapted to freely slide in the open top of the name plate frame to removably secure 'the device to the name plate frame, with the first mentioned leaf in hinged suspension in parallel Yimmediate proximity to the name plate frame, to enable the identification card carrying leaf to be hingedly rotated for facilitating reading of the identification card carried thereby. i
