More particularly the invention .relates rto means for removing oil residues from the storage tanks of refineries. In such tanks, in the course of time, heavy and extremely viscous sludge deposits collect insuch quantities that they seriously encroach upon the storage space. of the tanks.

Further objects and features of the invention will be apparent when the following description is considered in connection with the annexed drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross section of the jet pump of my invention; and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section showing the mode of adjusting the position of one of the nozzles. This section is taken on the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown at l the pump body which comprises a relatively narrow throat portion, the enlarged discharge end 2 and the enlarged intake end 3.
The intake end 3 is generally conical in form as is indicated at 4 and is provided with a shoulder 5 in which an annular ring 6 is pressed, this ring being tapered to form together with the tapered end 1 of the nozzle piece 8 an annular steam jet opening 9. The member 3 is also provided with an annular groove III which forms a. steam chamber and through which the opening I I permits the ingress of steam.
The nozzle piece 8 is threaded at its left hand end (as seen in Figure 1) and is provided with shown in the drawing. The member 3 isalso. provided with a boss l2 iseeliigure 2) which has a circular bore therein.

threaded on its interior surface and mates with the threads onthe. member 3. The wormwheel isretained against longitudinal movementby means of-the flanges l9 and. 20,-the flange I 9 being integral with the-member 4 and the flange 20, being formed upon the body piece 21 which body piece is similar to body piece 3. Thus, when the wormwheel I 8 rotates the nozzle 8 is moved longitudinally with respect to the member 6 whereby the amount of steam issuing through the annular openingiormed by the members 6 and 1 is adjusted.
As shown in Figure 1 a second nozzle is provided, this being similar to the parts just described so that the pumping action occurs in two stages. At the rear or left hand of the instrument as shown in Figure 1 a flange ring 22 is provided and is screwed to the member this ring being provided with internal threads into which a threaded intake pipe such as 23 may be inserted.
The nozzle of this stage may be exactly similar to and adjusted in a manner identical with that already described above in connection with the second stage of the pump. If desirable, the pump may be a single stage one only in which case member 2| will be omitted and replaced by a ring similar to ring 22 but designed to fit on the flange of member 3 rather than on member 2|. This ring would be internally threaded as is ring 22 for the insertion of a pipe such as 23 and with this construction a single stage jet pump is provided.
When two jets are used as shown in Figure 1 the inner nozzle, that is the one designated 8, acts mainly as a pressure discharge nozzle while the outer nozzle acts solely as a vacuum intake nozzle.
