" keyways into which keys formed on the walls of r the member 3 fit; The keys and keyways are not Claims. The present invention relates to. an apparatus and method for pumping viscous. material such as tank sludge through a. transmission line.
More particularly the invention .relates rto means for removing oil residues from the storage tanks of refineries. In such tanks, in the course of time, heavy and extremely viscous sludge deposits collect insuch quantities that they seriously encroach upon the storage space. of the tanks.
- Steam-ejector pumps have'been used for:removing sludge deposits such as those mentioned.
above. .The present. device, however, isa great improvement over the. prior devices in that. the
nozzles thereof are adjustable with great ease-and are so constructed asnot to requirewtheentire disassembling of the device..- Furthermore, "the 1 present device is provided with two. nozzles so arranged ;that it may beaeiiiciently-utilized with It is another object of my invention to provide such a jet pump so constructed that either a two nozzle device may be assembled from the parts or a single nozzle device may be assembled utilizing substantially the same parts omitting simply one of the nozzles.
Further objects and features of the invention will be apparent when the following description is considered in connection with the annexed drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross section of the jet pump of my invention; and
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section showing the mode of adjusting the position of one of the nozzles. This section is taken on the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown at l the pump body which comprises a relatively narrow throat portion, the enlarged discharge end 2 and the enlarged intake end 3.
The intake end 3 is generally conical in form as is indicated at 4 and is provided with a shoulder 5 in which an annular ring 6 is pressed, this ring being tapered to form together with the tapered end 1 of the nozzle piece 8 an annular steam jet opening 9. The member 3 is also provided with an annular groove III which forms a. steam chamber and through which the opening I I permits the ingress of steam.
The nozzle piece 8 is threaded at its left hand end (as seen in Figure 1) and is provided with shown in the drawing. The member 3 isalso. provided with a boss l2 iseeliigure 2) which has a circular bore therein.
Fast-erred to this; boss by-rsuitable means, a for example by thexscrcws. i3.,.is abearing 14 which bearing rotatably supports a stub shaft. I5 to one end-,which is affixed the; Worm [B and to the other end of which a handwheel I! is fastened. -1
.By meansof this. construction rotationof the .handwheel- H is eflective to. rotate the worm i5 and: thereiore the cooperatingswormwheel i8,
. which: wormwheel, as may be seen in Figure 1. is
threaded on its interior surface and mates with the threads onthe. member 3. The wormwheel isretained against longitudinal movementby means of-the flanges l9 and. 20,-the flange I 9 being integral with the-member 4 and the flange 20, being formed upon the body piece 21 which body piece is similar to body piece 3. Thus, when the wormwheel I 8 rotates the nozzle 8 is moved longitudinally with respect to the member 6 whereby the amount of steam issuing through the annular openingiormed by the members 6 and 1 is adjusted.
As shown in Figure 1 a second nozzle is provided, this being similar to the parts just described so that the pumping action occurs in two stages. At the rear or left hand of the instrument as shown in Figure 1 a flange ring 22 is provided and is screwed to the member this ring being provided with internal threads into which a threaded intake pipe such as 23 may be inserted.
The nozzle of this stage may be exactly similar to and adjusted in a manner identical with that already described above in connection with the second stage of the pump. If desirable, the pump may be a single stage one only in which case member 2| will be omitted and replaced by a ring similar to ring 22 but designed to fit on the flange of member 3 rather than on member 2|. This ring would be internally threaded as is ring 22 for the insertion of a pipe such as 23 and with this construction a single stage jet pump is provided.
When two jets are used as shown in Figure 1 the inner nozzle, that is the one designated 8, acts mainly as a pressure discharge nozzle while the outer nozzle acts solely as a vacuum intake nozzle.
means comprising an internally threaded wormwheel mounted on threads of said nozzle piece and restricted against longitudinal movement, a worm mounted to engage said wormwheel and means for manually rotating said worm to adjust said nozzle piece longitudinally of said annular ring with respectto its nozzle ring to vary the annular steam passageway therebetween and means for adjusting each nozzle piece with respect to its oooperating intake portion and nozzle ring, said means comprising a helioally threaded portion on said-nozzle piece, an internally, helically threaded I wormwheel mounted on said threaded portion, a
2. A steam jet pump comprising, in combination, a narrow throat portion, an enlarged intake portion, an annular nozzle ring'in said intake portion, a nozzle piece in said intake portion cooperating with said ring and means for adjusting said nozzle piece with respectto said ring, said means comprising an internally threaded wormwheel mounted on threads of said nozzle piece and restricted agains't'longitudinal movement, a worm mounted to engage said-wormwheeland means for manuallyrotatingsaidworm to adjust said nozzle piece, said enlarged? intake portion being provided with: means: toriprevent rotative move- 1 ment (if-said nozzle r piece relative to; said intake portion, v a
- 3. In a steam jet pump, inlcombination, anarrow throat portionga plurality of enlarged-intake portions arranged serially, an annular nozzlering in each intake'portion, an annular generally 'conical nozzle piece injeach intakeportion; each nozzlepiece being adapted to movelongitudin'ally with resp'ect to its' nozzle ring to vary the annular steam passageway therebetween, and means for adjustingeach nozzle piece with respect to its cooperatingintake portion and nozzle ring, said means comprising an internally, spirally threaded wormwheel mounted on each nozzle piece for rotative movement with're'spect'thereto and a manually rotatable worm mounted in cooperative engagement with said wormwheel.
boss on said enlarged intake portion, a bushing in said boss, ashaft mounted in said bushing and carrying a. worm in engagement with said wormwheel and a manually operable handwheel for rotating said worm and thereby adjusting the position of the associated nozzle piece with respect to its ring.
' 5. In a steam jet pump, incombination, anarrow throat portion, an enlarged intake portion, an annular nozzle ring fixed in one endof said intake portion, an interior cylindrical surface formed at the other end of said. intake portion, atnozzle piece adapted to move longitudinally toward and away from'said nozzle ring and guided by said interior cylindrical surface; a. helically threaded portion formed on said nozzle piece, a wormwheel having an internally helically threaded portion, said wheel being mounted on said nozzle'piece with saidrthreads in engagement, meanson said intake portion for preventing longitudinal movementof said wormwheelin one direction, 'aboss on said intake portion,'a shaft mounted insaid boss, a worm mounted on. said shaft in engagement with said wormwheel, manuall'y operable means for'rotating said shaft, and an annular flanged ring mounted on said intake portion,' said ring having an annular flange projecting against said wormwheel and preventing longitudinal movement thereof in the opposite direction, said ring also being internally threaded for connection of an intake pipe thereto.
