m e 1 7? 1- i i The present invention... relates to lettering scribers for reproducing characters from. atomplate. q e v; ""LJ':
More specifically, the invention relates toan attachment provided .for use with a scriberyof the type shown in Letters Patent,.No. 2 ;050,05S
. cooperable with a template of the type shown in of thepresent invention, the attachment-is applied to the otherwise conventional scriher of the type just mentioned and the scriber is then used to trace the characters on the conventional template of the next smaller standard conventional size, with theresult that the letters are reproduced with the same widthas thoseofthe smaller characters; but with the height of the characters on thee-iven teniplate. r "l'he letters are; therefore;reproduced" Q change in only one aspect, namely; tnatof dth, and the desired height has'bee'n retained. We have'obtained characters of the desired height of the 'giventemplate but have obtained a group of the desired length by 'applyingth attachment and making use of the template having the desired width of character. I
When the scriber carrying the' attachment. is
applied to a template andithe characters of; the j 5 template are traced in the usual way,'.th'e reproduced letters appear changed in one afsp ectfoiily. namely, that of heightQQand may he reproduced as letters taller or shorter, respectively, than the characters of the'template, and without change:
in slope. a l v i It is an object of this invention to provide means applicable to a conventional scriber of the typementioned and for use with a conventional template of the type mentioned, whereby the characters on Qthe template may be: reproduced with onlyonechange in aspect, that-His, the letter maybe reproduced taller or shorter,'respec,-
It is an object of the presentinvention to provide a member for rigid useattachment to the reproducing arm of a conventional scriherof, the type mentioned wherebythe letters reproduced when the scriberwith theattachment is applied to a. conventionalgiven template or" the type mentioned and having, characters of a given height the letters are wider or narrower, respectively,

. Let us assume that, we desire to reproduce a nameplate .fora meter or, thelike, and. We find that the 240 Cent. template gives a letterof the desired; height, but that. the letters are. too wide for reproduction ofithe firm name or the instrument name one label oranameplate of .thej d available. The attachment leis then appliedto a; on ee iqsel we 5 i h -s e i0.-

and width willbe of thesame width as thos'e'of the given template, but have a heig-ht sirnil-ar We have obtained the height of the characters 'ofthe 240"Cent. template and conipressed the characters as to wldth relative to those of the 240 Centrtemplate. The characters on the. conventionaltemplate have slope, butth'e characteristics of the com venti'on'al,scriber are suchjthat the reproduced letters arevertical,v and fthe use' of the attachment of the present invention does not change this coriditioni In compressni g tiieletters at it diatom-sieve been enabled to get letters of the desired height 1 scribeiu of conventional construction with its guide pin. i I slidof letter without increased height the attachment 1,
I4 is applied to the arm l5 toshorten' the efiec tive length of the arm IS in the manner shown in Figure '2, and the scriber i now applied to-the 290 Cent. template. i i
In general, given a desired'height anddesirihg an increase or decrease in the width of the letter, the arm'is shortened and the next-template of higher-order is used, or the arm is extended and the next template of lower order is usedfrespectively. a
If a desired widthof letter is found, then it is possible by increasing or decreasing the eifective length of the arm'by the use of the attachment to increase'or decrease, respectively, the height to, the height of the characters of. the templates of the next higher order or of the next "lower order, respectively.
Thus, only one dimension of the letter is changed, and the result is not that of a pantograph, or the equivalent, in which both dimensions are changed. Further, there'is no change in slope incident to the use of the attachment.
The attachment, therefore, enables usto use a conventional scriber of the type mentioned to trace a character on a conventional template of the type mentioned for reproducing the character on'a nameplate, or on a drawing, but with the traced character appearing changed in only one aspect in the reproduced form; The change brought about by the use of the attachment may "The conventional arm ll 5 of the conventional scriber I is provided with a slot H which opens at one end into a bore l8 adapted toreceive a-;..
marking pen or pencil, and with a screw to engage the marking implement. The screw has a knurled head l9 provided with a flange 29, The attachment It has a pin 24 which is adapted to be entered in the bore l8, and has a pin 'or key 2! adapted to enter the slot I! to hold the attachment l4 rigid relative tothe arm 15 inone use position of the attachment as in'Figure 1. The flange 2B of the knurled'head I9 also engages the attachment and tends to hold it rigid.
When the attachment I4 is positioned on the arm l as in Figure 2; a' shoulder 22 on theattachment bears against thearm' I5,fand again the flange 20 engages the attachmentM tohold it rigid relative to the arm l5.
The attachment I4 is provided with a bore 23 and a 'securingscrew 25 to accommodate a marking implement.
In one form of the .attachmentlt which has to the center of. the bore 23,.along' the line A of Figure 3, isapproximately %Z"', and .thejver- V I tical center line of the bore 23is displaced; renitive to the vertical'center line offthe pin lz -tby an' angle of approximately 18. In other words,
aline bisecting the arm carryingthej 'borei23 is at an angle of approximately 13 to the line bisecting the arm carrying the pin 24.
t will now be obvious that the result of reproducingta character-changed in only one aspect relative tb'the 'charactei-"traced on the template may be obtained with other combinations of present invention.
' It will be obvious that the letters of a given conventional template of the type mentioned can now be reproduced having a height corresponding to that of the letters of templates of the next standard higher or lower order, when the attachment herein described is attached to the conventional scriber ofthetype mentioned in the manner shown. Each template, therefore, is made available to afford three different letter heights while the letter remains of the width of the template used, and the attachment greatly increases the usefulness of -a standard set of templates. 7
I claim asmy invention:
1. An attachment for a scriber of the type described for cooperation with a template of the type described and with the scriber having an arm provided with a slot and with a bore to normally receive a marking implement, said attachment having a pin entered in the bore of the arm and also having a key enterable in the slot of said arm, said attachment having abore to receive the marking implement of the scriber positioned in offset relation to the vertical center line .65 been :used successfully withthe conventional of said pin, and means on the attachment for securing the marking implement clamped in place.
2. An attachment for a scriber of the type described for cooperation with a template of the type described and with the scriber having an arm provided with a slot and With a bore to normally receive a marking implementsaid attachment including a mounting portion having spaced projections to interfit with the bore and slot of said arm to increase the effective length thereof, an integral extension formed at an angle on said mounting portion and having a shoulder formed thereon to contact the scriber arm to shorten the effective length thereof, andlmeans on said angled extension to hold the marking implement in place, said attachment adapted to be positioned on the scriber arm for varying one of the dimensions of -a character being reproduced while maintaining another dimension of the'character the same.
3. An attachment for a scriber of the type described for cooperation with a template of the 'type'des'cribed and with the scriber having an arm provided with a slotand a bore to normally receive amarking implement, said attachment comprising a body formed of two integral arm sections positioned at an angle with respect to one another, one 'cf' said arm sections formed with projections to interfit with the scriber arm and the second of said arm-sections formed'with ashoulder and having a bore and a slot therein,
means on the second arm section for securing the marking implement clamped in place thereon, and means adapted to secure said body in either one of two positions on the scriber arm to reproduce a traced character with a dimensional change in one respect only by either changing the height or the width of the traced character while respectively maintaining eitherthe width orthe height the same as that of the traced character.
