1 Claim. (Cl. 33-23) This invention relates to a lettering set. More specifically, it relates to a lettering set of the general type shown and described in Patent No. 2,050,058 of August 4, 1936, in which a scriber having a tail pin, tracer pin and writing instrument at the vertices of a triangle is used in conjunction with a template having a horizontal tail pin groove and character grooves.
Many adjustable scribers for use in lettering sets of this general type have also been devised. However, most of these permit only a limited amount of adjustment and in most cases the exact height and inclination resulting from any adjustment are not readily determinable. Furthermore, many of these adjustable scribers are quite complicated in construction.
For example, Burgess Patent No. 2,213,120 of August 27, 1940, discloses an attachment for lettering scribers made up of two adjustable arms one of which is inserted at the position for the writing instrument in a c:n-ventional scriber. This scriber does permit a wide degree of variation in the heights and inclination of the characters formedtherewith but it will be apparent from what follows that this attachment is much more complicated than necessary and nothing is provided to enable the draftsman to predetermine what size and inclination of characters will be obtained by any given adjustment.
Patent No. 2,686,971 which issued on August 24, 1954 to Leon Valois shows a scriber with an adjustable tracing pin which also permits a wide variation in the size and inclination of characters. A setting up grating is disclosed for use with this scriber which is provided with numerous depressions for locating the tracer pin in various positions with respect to the tail pin and the writing instrument. However, the amount of slant or inclination of the characters and their height when the tracer pin is set in any of these depressions is not exactly predetermined. As described in the patent, a reference sheet may be provided to illustrate the characters that will be obtained for each position of the tracer pin but this reference sheet has been made up empirically and does not indicate the exact slant and height of the characters.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a lettering set with a scriber of very simple construction having an adjustable writing instrument arm and including a chart for setting the scriber so that it will produce a character of any predetermined height or slant from a template.
These objects of the invention and the means for their attainment will be more fully understood after reading the following description taken in connection with the drawings in which:

Referring to Figs. I, II and III, the scriber 2 is made up of elongated body 4 and an arm 6. The elongated body '4 is provided with a tail pin 8 near one end (see Fig. III) and a tracer pin 10 near the other end. A weight 12 may be. provided above the tail pin 8 in order to hold the tail pin 8 in the tail pin groove 28 when the scriber is used on the tern-plate. The arm 6 carries a writing instrument 14 at its free end. This writing instrument is preferably a pen of the type shown. The pen is removable so that other pens may be inserted in order that lines of various weights or widths may be obtained. The knurled headed screw 16 holds the writing instrument in place on the arms 6. A post 18 is also provided to support the weight of the arm 6 so that the pen 14 will be heldat the proper height above the paper. This post 18 is. threaded into the arm 6 and is adjustable therein in conventional manner to permit proper flow of the ink from .the. pen 14.
Pivot means are provided on the elongated body 4 and the arm 6 is adjustably attached to the elongated body 4 at the pivot means. The attachment is such that angular and longitudinal adjustament of the arm 6 is possible from the pivot point. In the embodiment shown, the arm 6 passes under the elongated body 4 and a screw 20 passes upward through a slot 22 in the arm 6 and through a hole in the elongated body 4. A spherical shaped nut 24 is threaded on the screw 20 and holds the arm 6 in adjusted position. The spherical shaped nut 24 also. serves asaconvenient means for holding the scriber when it is used for lettering. The template 26 shown in Figs. II and III is provided with a conventional tail pin groove 28 and character grooves 30 forming characters which are backwardly inclined at. an angle a.
In order to set the scriber for drawing characters of a desired height and slant, thescriber is set upon the, chart 32 as shown in Fig. I. The chart is provided with marks 34 and 36 upon which the tail pin and tracer pin respectively are set. The chart is also provided with marks for locating the position of the writing instrument for various slants and heights of lettering to be produced by the scriber. In the embodiment shown, these latter marks are at the intersections of the radial lines 38 and the parallel lines 40. The lines 38 radiate from a zero point 42 which is located along a line 44 making an angle a/ 2 with the line joining the tail pin mark and the tracer pin mark. The zero point 42 is a distance d sin 3a/2 cos a from the tail pin. The parallel lines 40 are all parallel to the line 44 and points along any one of these lines all represent positions for the Writing instrument which will enable the scriber to draw characters of the same height. The particular one of these lines 46 which passes through the tracer pin mark 36 shows the location of all positions for the Writing instrument which will enable the scriber to draw characters of height. In other words, the characters will be of th: same vertical height as the characters on the template. The ratio of the height of characters drawn by the writing instrument when it is located along any other parallel line 40 to the characters on the template will be equal to the ratio of the distance of that line from the zero point to the distance of the line 46 from the zero point.
The particular radial line 48 which passes through the zero point 42 and is perpendicular to the line 44 represents the location of all the positions of the writing instrument which will enable it to produce vertical characters. The slant of characters produced when the writing instrument is located along any other radial line is equal to the angle between that radial line and the line 48. The radial lines 38 and the parallel lines 40 are preferably numbered on the chart as shown so that it will 'be immediately apparent whatisize andslantof charac ters will be obtained for. any setting 'of thewriting instrument 14. p g g 1 The lines 44 and 48 divide the chart into four quadrants. The lower right hand quadrant includes all positions 'of the writing instrument which will enable the scriber'to produce inverted characters with a backward slant. Generally, the upper left hand quadrant will include the most useful positions for the writing instrument. However, there will be cases where backward slants are required and occasionally it may even be advantageous to adjust the scriber-for inverted lettering.
The chart 32 may take various physical forms. For example, it may be a sheet of plastic or metal having the tail pin mark, tracer pin mark, radial lines and parallel lines engraved or printed or reproduced in any suitable manner upon the surface. On the other hand, a recess or hole can be provided in a plastic sheet for the tracer pin mark, tail pin mark and for each of the intersection points of radial lines and parallel lines which represent degrees of slant and percentages of height which it is desired to obtain with the particular lettering set. The chart 32 may also be a plastic sheet or fabric sheet or merely a sheet of paper with the necessary markings drawn or printed thereon.

a horizontal tail pin groove and character grooves forming characters, said characters being inclined on said template at an angle a from the vertical, a scriber comprising an elongated body having a tail pin near one end and a tracer pin near the other end, the distance between said tail pin and tracer pin being d, an arm carrying a writing instrument near its 'free' end and pivot means provided on said elongated body, said arm being adjustably attached at said pivot means permitting angular and longitudinal adjustment of said arm so that when said tail pin and tracing pin are fixed, said writing instrument can be adjusted over a wide area limited only by the length and adjustability of said arm and a chart for setting said scriber having a mark upon which the tail pin is set, a mark upon which the tracer pin is set and marks for locating the position of said writing instrument for various slants and heights of lettering produced by said scriber when used in conjunction with said template, said latter marks being along lines radiating from a zero point, said zero point being located at a distance d sin 3a/2 cos a from said tail pin along a line making an angle a/ 2 with the line running between said tail pin and tracer pin, marks representing positions of the writing instrument for making characters of the same vertical height being along lines running parallel to the line between the tail pin and the zero point.
