This invention relates to improvements in window constructions.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved window construction wherein the sash frame may be vertically reciprocated to open and close the window with a minimum of effort and in a positive manner,
A further object of thev invention is to provide a window construction wherein the sash frame is normally positively and frictionally sealed in the window casing.
A further object is to provide a window construction having spring-urged means to normally seal the vertical edges of thev window and roller means adapted to displace the spring means for elevating and lowering the sash frame.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical elevational View of one of the vertical portions of a sash frame provided with the structure' of my invention, shown in normal, sealed position, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken at the lower part of Fig. 1, the operative parts being shown in position to permit the sash to be vertically reciprocated. y
'Fig 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows.
As shown in the drawing, in the window construction of my invention, the sash frame I5 is provided with a vertical edge to which an edge strip 26 of friction material or the like is preferably secured. The post piece 21 of the window casing is provided with a vertical channel 28 in which the channel strip IIl is adapted to be transversely urged by resilient means such as the springs II vagainst the edge of the sash, to seal the sash in the casing as hereinafter more particularly described. The springs I I are fixed to the post piece 21, said springs preferably having their free ends angularly disposed as at I2 and terminating in flat portions I3 adapted to be `freely received within the channel ystrip I0 to normally urge the latter toward the edge of the' sash frame,
As shown in the drawing, the following novel means is provided for displacing the channel strip I0 from the edge of the sash frame against the tension of the springs I I, to enable the sash frame to be vertically reciprocatecl: A pair of links I6 is positioned on the sash frame adjacent the vertical edge thereof, in spaced relation, by means of studs I'l or the like xed to the sash frame and freely passing through apertures in the links.
The links are further provided with ears I 8 havthe movement of one link will cause the other link to pivot in a corresponding manner.
Each oi the links is provided with a roller I9 vfreely rotatably disposed thereon and adapted,
on the rotation of the links about their pivots il, to be moved against the channel strip I0 as hereinafter more particularly described; In the preferred form of my invention, rotation of the links is attained by providing one of the links with a second ear 20 having a stud 2| to pivotally secure one end of the operating lever 22 to said link, the free end of said lever being preferably flattened to provide a finger piece 24, the lever being pivoted to the sash frame intermediate the free end 2li and pivot 2|, preferably by means of stud 23 fixed to the sash frame and freely passing through the lever 22.
In the normal position of the parts, the channel strip ID will be frictionally maintained against the edge of the sash frame by the tension of the springs II, and the rollers I9 and the link I6 will be held in their inoperative position shown in Fig. l. When it is desired to elevate or lower the sash frame, the free end 24 of the operating lever 22 is moved upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby pivoting the links I6 downwardly; the rollers I9 displace the channel strip I0 from the free edge of the sash frame I5 and enable the latter to be vertic-ally moved with the rollers I 9 rolling on the channel strip I0, so that a minimum of force is required for this operation.
When the sash frame has been moved to the desired position, manual pressure on the free end 24 of the operating lever 22 is released; thereupon the links I5 and Ichannel member I0 will return to the position shown in Fig. 1, responsive to the tension of the springs II. It will be understood that the above description relative to one vertical edge portion of the sash frame and window casing likewise applied to the opposite vertical portion, The parts described may be manufactured of any desired er convenient alloy, plastic or other suitable material.
From the foregoing disclosure it will be seen that numerous refinements may be incorporated in the construction of the device within the scope of the inventive concept as set forth herein and dened in the appended claims.
It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the channel member I0 serves as a rail for the rollers I9 while the sash frame I5'is being raised or'lowered. j It will further be apparent, from an inspection of Fig. 1, that, as the roller-carrying links I6 are pivotally mounted on the sash frame l 5 in spaced` relation adjacent the vertical edge of the sash `frame, the rollers I9 will contact the channel member I0 at spaced points, whereby the sash frame may be vertically reciprocated in an easy, smooth fashionwitho,ut dangerv of wedgingy inr the post pieces.,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettersl Pateneis:
