disposed therein and secured to a stem 31, which latter forms a continuation of the valve stem 33. The piston 36 is biased upward by means of a compression spring 38 "disposed-within an extension 39 of the casing 35 and having an upper end engaging a spring plate 40 secured to an ex tension il of the piston 31. The upper end of the extension 4 l engages 'a screw42 having an outer end "secured to an emergency handwheel'to permit manual closing of the'valve 32 for high speed operation upon failure of the automatic mechanism. The piston 36 withinthe 'casing35 7 forms a lower and an upper pressure chambert' The lower chamber underneath the piston 36 is connected by a pipe 43 to alower stage of the cruising turbine and thereby is subjected to low stage pressure of the latter. The upper chamber above the piston 36 is connected by a, pipe 44' '1 to a higher stage, preferably the first stage of the high pressure turbine I0, andthereby is sub-' ject to the pressure of the first segment or section of the first stage nozzle. In the position shown the pressure in the upper chamber is low because the valves I3 of the high pressure turbineare closed-and the pressure thenexisting .aheadof' the first stage of the high pressure turbine is the spring '41 holds the piston in its upperlend position in which the valve disk 36 is fullyopen and the disk 23 is closed. During high speed operation the cruising turbine is shut down by 0105-.
thereof, I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown'is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried'out by other means.
What-I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States is:
1. Ship propulsion turbine arrangement for cruisingand high speed operation comprising a cruising turbine, a. high pressure turbine, a condenser, means including a valve mechanism for connecting in one position the turbines in series and for connecting in another position the cruising turbine to the condenser, and means for autoa matically reversing the position of the valve mechanism in response to change from cruising,
to high speed operation and vice versa, said means includinga device responsive to changes of the 7 pressure difieren'ce between a high pressure stage of one turbine and a low pressure stage of the 7 other turbine.
2. Ship propulsion turbine arrangement. for cruising andhigh 'speed'operation comprising a cruising. turbine, a high pressure turbine-awnj denser, means including a valve mechanism for connecting in one positionthe turbines in series and for connecting inanother positionthe cruis {ing turbine to the condenser, and means for auto- ;matically reversing the position of the valve mechanism upon" change from cruising to high ing of the valves 18 by means ofthe handwheel i9 and the high pressure turbine valves l3 are opened by means of the handwheel i5. To assure safe operation it is important that the position of the valve disks 3| and 32 is reversed upon openplished automatically becauseupon the opening of the first valve [3 highpressure'is set up in the upper chamber above the-piston 36 and the force exertedby this high pressure causes .downward movement of the piston 36 against the biasing force of the spring 38 and theforce of the pressure existing in the lower chamber below the pis ton 36.:'Downward'movement {of thepi ston 36 causes closing of the valve disk 32 and opening of the valve disk 29, thereby connecting the "exhaust-conduit 22 ofthe cruising'turbine to the condenser 25. Vice .versaj upon closing of the high pressure turbine valves 13 by the handwheel. [5 and opening of the cruising turbine valves [8 by the handwheel IS the valve disks 3|,- 32 are moved into the position indicated in r the drawing. 1
Thus, with my invention I have accomplished an improved construction and arrangement/ofv ship propulsion turbines whereby the position of a valve mechanism including a valv'efor cone. necting the cruising'turbine" and the high pres sure turbine in series andanothervalve forconnecting the cruising turbine to a condenser is automatically reversed upon'change from cruising to high speed operation, and vice versa;
Having described the method of operation of my'invention,-together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment This reversing is accom speed operation and 'vice versa, said means i'ncluding a device responsive to the pressure-differencebetween the pressures in an intermediate stage of the cruising turbine and ma highpr'essure stage of. thehigh pressure turbine.
