Ain accordance With a selected vpositional code.
Such lcontrol devices are usually passed sequentially tothe-'machine to be controlled so lthat veach control device effects the predetermined operation'of the machine in accordance With the lcoded control data carried thereby. V1n *many instances, the vcontrol device maybe employed to lcarry coded representations of letters or Words; While in other instances the coded data `carr-ied'by the control device represent lnumerical control-data.
When the coded representations represent numerical data, this data Amay be used in various Ways,V as for example, to set up the represented numerical data as one ofthe factors to be employed in a computing 4operation of a computing machine.
Control devices oi" this general character may be in the form of so-called Hollerith or Powers vcards or maybe formed as a part `of a printing and controldevice ofthe general' character illusvtrated and claimed in Gollwitzer `Patent No.
2,132,412. In control devices of the general charactervdisclosed in thatpatent, the controldata holes or perforations are formed-onbut a-predetermined portion of the completev device, 'other or remaining portions or areas of the-device'being l employed to carrya printing plate and an index or "name-address visual caption card, the printing plate bearing embossed printing characters to be utilized in a printing machine While the caption or index card bears an impression fromthe printing plate, and the coded representations-of various control data or index data may be formed in such predetermined portion of the complete device with the machine of the'present invention.
In the preparation of devices ofthiszgeneral character, the data representing perforations are formed upon a series of control devicesin succession, such data being taken vfrom asuitable list. The preparation of the control .devices .involves the reading ,of the desired data pertaining to a particular control ,device from the list, and the formation of coded physical Arepresentations of the control data upon the;con
trol device. An important object-ofthe present "selector, "areas of control devices.
inventionis, therefore, to 'facilitate the formationof Vsuch "data'on control devices Aand the 'like andafrelated'object is to provide a machine embodying structural characteristics particularly intended `to Afacilitate the formation of Yceded-indexorselecting and control data upon control devices of 'the general character above -described.
1Anotlfler'obiect is to-enable a machine for formingthe "desire'dcontrol 'data and index data on "control devices Yof this'general character to be so constructed thatthe'inherent operating cycle vof f'themachine'issuchas to promote eiiicient and-accurate y operations lby* the-operator.
'The present invention includes an arrangelmentfof punch elements selectively operable to --xproduceperforations representative of the desired data in the control and in the index, or Obviously,
rrepeated fuse of #these "punch elements necessi- 'tates'occasionalgrinding of such elements so as to` insure theformation "of 4clean cut perforations infthefcontroli-devicefbecause, should such perfofrations -be irregular t'orbe improperly formed, the accuracy vof .wat machine, tsuch` as a 'computing .machinefinwhich the :control 'devices are subsequently `used, may tbe rseriously impaired. is,therefore, another object of the present in- 3o -vention to lenablethe f elements 'of the punching -unitfor sharpening or otherlrepair` Without dismeans to be 4removedfeasily zan'd yquickly las 'a mani/ling the-machine or anyl substantial portion -thereof,-as has'been-the customary requirement of earlier machines of this `fgeneral character,
. and Ato enable Y the :punch assembly to be easily and-quioklyremountedandadjusted as a unit ,to vinsure yproper `perform-ance of `the `required fperforatingfoperations.
-Punching .machinesof a fkind intended for useingproducing perforations-in fan index area orfa.controleareafoffcontrol devices upon selec- .tive 1 manipulation of s'zcontrol keysfrequently in- .volve r-,a complicated r'mechanical organization of Ia `fkind .which tis .costly `to manufacture 'and 1 as- `semi:le,,andbecause ofits numerous operating vpar,ts-snch machines .are in many instances subject I,to ,possible fbreak-,downs `due to'improper adjustmentnf the inter-connected parts. It is, therefore, i-another ,object of *the* vpresent `inventiontoprovidea .punching machine` of f this character wherein i aA simple organization .of elements is employed to transmitir-lotion.iromthe control keys directly to means controlling selection of 'the-punch or punches.
Still another object of the invention is to pro- A operation.
2 c vide a new and improved punching machinev of the kind exemplified herein and in which mar chine operation is instituted upon selective manipulation of a selected key thereon-and wherein means are set automatically each time a key is actuated to initiate machine operation, to prevent continued` operation ofthe machine after it has completed 'l a cycle of 'operation even though the key initially actuated to 'start said cycle of operation is retained in a machine-perating'positionyand a related object is to s'o.,'
construct such a machine that an operated` selecting key must be returned to its normal posimachine operation tion before another cycle of may be instituted. l 1
Another object of the 'invention is to provide a machine of the aforesaid characterY that is operative not only to produce coded representations of digits on a control area in a control devicefbut also to produce representations of` coded identifying or classication data to identify items or devices having certain characteristics in com- '.mon. v i
Another feature ofthe present invention-is to provide a punching machine of the kind exemplied herein and which has recinrocable punches freely guided in a punch block for positive movementdownwardly to eiTect a punching operation only when a selector element is positioned thereaboveA and having means to insure proper positioning'of all of said punches at the completion of 'a cycle'of machineoperation so asV to enable movementv of such'selector elements as are se- Y lected preparatory to instituting another onerating'cycle and thereby cause punching operation of any of said punches in an eiicient and accurate manner. v l L 1 It will bev manifest that in'a machine such as -that to which the' present. invention pertains,V Y
wherein a nluralitv of operative mechanisms are f provided and whose various operations are' inter- Y related in the course of a cycle oi' machine operation. it is essential that'the time of operation o1 the various mechanism be closelvcontr'olled so as to insure proper operation of the various mechanisms and alsoLto enable operation ofthe Ivarious mechanisms s'o-as to enable accurate performance of the machine. object of theinvention to provide a machine of the kind having various mechanisms operable in ltimed lrelation to oneian'other upon actuation of control means through operation of a selected operating element.'
As has been stated hereinabove. control means' on control devices may be' conveniently-represented by perforations and to this endapunching mechanism AVis provided for producing such perforations, and hence additional objects of thisy invention are'to provide novel mechanismjicr .producing control and selector perforations in control devicesand the like; toy enable such a punching mechanism to jbe key controlled; to
