The present invention relates to a machine for punching or perforating .other work on cards or sheets of paper or other material, for example, such as are used for recording, tabulating and other statistical work, and one of the objects of my present v invention is to improve the machine shown in my prior Patent No. 1,298,400. In the present invention as in myformer machine, provision is made for' feeding sheets or other objects, for performing punching or other work on said sheets, said operations being performed in part automatically and in part under the control of manual devices such as keys. Certain work on the sheets which is effected automatically is 'known as repetition work being controlled from another punched card or sheet which serves as a pattern.
In the present invention provision is made for feeding the sheet or like material first to a punching or operating section and subsequently, preferably immediately thereafter, the card or sheet which has been operated upon is fed to a so-called controlling section in which a reading is made of the work already performed in the operating section. These readings are adapted to control the operation of the parts in the operating or punching section which are operating upon the following card or sheets.
In the present invention the repetition work isperformed under the control of rec-- ords which have been previously operated upon and the transfer of such records from the operating section to the controlling section is effected by the machine itself. By so employing the finished record as a pattern the expense and trouble of punching separate master or pattern cards is obviated, the machine is made more compact than heretofore, and the operations of the machine are improved.
Other objects of the present invention reside in the provision of means for effecting the suppression of repetition work on selected columns of a sheet. The provisionof such means permits the pattern card to be punched in a plurality 'of columns and then at the will of the operator certain selected columns onlyor all of them 'may be effective to subsequently control the performance of the repetition Work.
Other objects of the present 'invention reside in the improvement in machines for performing repetition work of various sorts upon one sheet under the conjoint control of-another sheet and manipulative devices such as keys, together with selective devices which operate to suppress the performance of repetition work on selected portions of the sheet.

For a description of the details of the punch, reference may be made to my former patent No. 1,298,400. Generally the machine comprises a base 1l having a guide or slideway- 12 for the cards or sheets upon which punching or other Work is to be performed. The slideway is of proper dimensions to receive two cards 13 and 13a in end to end relation. The usual card carrier 14 is provided with suitable upturned end lingers 15 to bear against and advance the cards as the carrier advances under the power of the spring motor 1G.
The punches 19, dies 18, magnets 26 and escapement 17 are similar to those shown in my prior patent, and for normal manually controlled punching, the 'usual keys 58 are provided.
It will be assumedthat it is desired to perform certain work, such as punching certain data on a card and to thereafter perform automatically certain repetition operations such as punching a subsequent card or sheet without operating the keys.
The carriage 14 is irst displaced to the right, winding up spring motor 16. A card 13 is inserted in the guideway and located against shoulders 15. The operator now punches the desired data on the card by depressing the proper keys which actuates the various punching devices and steps the carriage along in the well known manner.
. After the tirst card is perforated certain punchings are to be repeated to correspond exactly with the punchings just made. For this purpose the just completed card is utilized as a master card and controls the punching of the next card. Obviously all the data previously perforated is not to be repeated on the following cards.
Afterthe punching of the first card is completed and when the card carrier is in left hand position, the operator selects the card columns in which repeat perforating operations are to be performed, and by reference to scales 62 notes the numbers of the desired repeat columns. Thereafter the operator swings up the correspondingly numbered switch fingers 63, reference being made to scale 64. The selected lingers are latched into contact with a common contact bar 65 and the fingers themselves are adapted to establish contact with a switch 66 which is carried by, and movable with, the card carrier and electrically connected with the common brush carrying bar 46. The brushes 48 make contact with conductorI bars 44 as in my prior patent. Unlike the former construction, the brush carrying bar 46 is iXed and 'the cooperating card is movable. The brushes are adapted to be swung to an ineffective position by depressing the finger piece 49, as in my previous patent.
Prior to the second or repetition punching operation the carrier 14 is returned to the right. Prior to such return movement pawls 60, pivoted upon a shaft 61, drop down behind the right end edge of card 13, and upon the displacement of the carrier to the right displaces the card 13 to the left relatively to the carriage into the position indicated by card 13a. A new unpunched card is then inserted in the carrier at the right end. By the above operation the previously punched card is transferred to the left end of the carriage and the card to receive a new punching is positioned at the right therein.
The operator having irst swung the brushes down in contact with the card 13a operates the keys in the usual manner and punches the proper holes in card 13. Card 13a passes under the brushes 48. When a perforation in a selected row of card 13 comes under one of the brushes `the proper punch is automatically operated by magnets 26 and links 61 actuated by the magnets to punch a corresponding hole in card 13 and the card carrier is thereafter automatically stepped forward to the next column position. Here again the perfor-ating of card 13 may be performed automatically provided there is both a perforation in the column of card 13L and the return or brush ing of card 13. Punching may be effected in these or any other columns by the manual depression of keys 58. i
The foregoing manual and automatic operations are continued until the card carrier has moved to extreme left position. The former card 13a is then removed, the carrier displaced to the right, thereby relatively displacing card 13 to the left to the 13" osition. A new unpunched card is inserte@ in the right end of the carrier and a new punching cycle carried out.
The present machine obviates the use of the special pattern cards which were used with my prior device, and enables gang punching operation to be carried out without the preparation of special pattern cards. Each completed card acts as a pattern for the next succeeding card or sheet which is placed in the machine. If at any time it is desired to change the columns upon which vautomatlc repetition punching or gang punching is to beperformed it is -only necessary to manipulate the proper switches to control the desired selected column and suppress the punching in other columns.
For a fuller understanding of the path of current through the various circuits, magnets and contacts reference may be had to my previous patent. The selective switches are disposed in the return line 51, and by interrupting the ilow of current therein prevent the energizing of the solcnoids 26 under the controlling of the energizing card except when the brushes are over the selected columns for repetition work or punching.
lVhile the invention is particularly adapted for controlling repetition punching operations in the broader aspect, the invention is not so limited, but it may be adapted for use in connection with the performance 0f other kinds of repetition work, for example, the making of a printed record.
Hereafter in the claims the term sheets will be utilized to cover broadly cards, paper sheets and like instrumentalities acted upon bythe machine.
Having thus described the invention. what I claim is: i
1. A punching machine, comprising. in combination, means for feeding a sheet to punching position and then to controlling position, manually controlled means for punching the said sheets, and means under the control ofl the previously perforated sheet when in the controlling position for automatically controlling said punching means at some previousl selected .positions only of the sheet to per orm predetermined repetition punchings Without manual aid, leaving the rest of the punching for manual control in the other positions of the sheet.
2. A punching machine for sheets comprising, means for successively feeding sheets to punching positions and thence to control positions, punching means for perforating the sheet, keys controlling said means for manually controlled operations, means controlled by the sheet which Was perforated at the preceding operation when the same is fed into the controlling position fo-r performing predetermined repetition punchings at previously selectedpositions only of the sheet without the aid of keys, leaving lthe balance of the punching for manual control in other positions of the sheet.
3. A machine for operating upon sheets, embodying means for feeding a sheet to a position to be operated upon and thence to a controlling position, manually controlled Work performing members to operate on the sheet, when fed from position to position, and means under the control of the emerging sheet when in the controlling position, and which has been previously worked upon by said members for auto-matically controlling said members at some previously selected positions only of the sheet to perform predetermined repetition Work without manual aid and leaving the rest of the work inother positions of the sheet for manual control.
4. In a punching machine, in combination, means for feeding sheets successively, manually controlled means for perforating the sheets, means controlled by the perforations of the preceding sheet formed by the afore' said means for automatically controlling thepunching of corresponding repetition punchings upon the next succeeding sheet, and means independent of the previously punched cards for suppressing the operation of the aforesaid means in certain positions of the sheet.
5. In a punching machine in combination, means for feeding a sheet, manually controlled means for perforating the sheet, means controlled by the perforations of sheet for automatically effecting the punching of corresponding perforations upon a succeeding sheet, and a plurality of selecting devices for controlling the last mentioned means and selecting the portion or portions of the sheet upon Whicl. said repetition punchings are to be made.
6. In a punching machine, a plurality of magnetically operated punches, manual mea-ns for controlling the operation thereof, means for feeding a sheet past said punches and thereafter to a controlling position, circuit controlled means under the control of a card emerging'from the punching section of the machine and in controlling position for controlling and effecting an automatic operation of said punches to secure repetition punching upon the following sheet.
7. In a punching machine, a plurality of manually lcontrolled punches, means for feeding a sheet past the said punches, means controlled conjo-intly by a previously punched sheet prior to its removal from the machine after a punching operation thereon and presettable selective devices for controlling and effecting repetition punching upon a following sheet.
8.V The invention setforth in cla-im 7, in which electrical means is pro vided for operating the said punches and in which the conjoint controlling means for repetition punching comprises electrical circuit devices.
9. In a machine for operating upon sheets in combination with reciprocable means for feeding a blank sheet to a position in which it is operated upon, said feeding means being adapted to support a blank sheet and a previously operated upon sheet as a control pattern, means for shifting the previously operated upon sheet upon return of the feeding means before its removal from the ma.- chine after being operated upon to a position in which it serves as a controlling pattern sheet, means for operating upon said blank sheet, and means for controlling said operations in part by a previously operated upon sheet when the latter is in controlling position.
10. In a punching machine, means for feeding a sheet therethrough, means for punching said sheet While in successive positions, means for feeding a pattern sheet concurrently With feeding of the first mentioned sheet past the punches and means co-ntrolling the operation of said, punches by the pattern sheet, said means including electrical circuits adapted to be establishedv through said pattern sheet, and selectively manipulable switch devices in said circuits for suppressing perforating operations which would otherwise be performed under the control of said pattern sheet.
11. In a punching machine, in combination, a punching section, a controlling section, means movable in one direction for feeding unpunched cards through the punching section and in an opposite direction to receive an unpunched card, means for preventing a card last fed through the punching section from moving with *the feeding Vmeans when the latter returns to receive a new unpunched card, means for supporting the said last fed card so that the said feeding means may advance it to a control section during the feeding of the said new card through the punching section, and means under the control of the.'
perforations of the punched cards in the controlling section for controlling the operation of the punching section of the machine.
12. In a machine of the class described in which repetition Work is performed upon one sheet under the control of another sheet, in combination, means for feeding sheets through said' machine and means for operating upon said sheets While in successive positions, means under the control of another sheet concurrently movable with said first mentioned sheet for controlling the operation of said last mentioned means and manually adjustable selective devices for suppressing repetition work from said other sheet at selected positions upon the first sheet.
13. In a machine of the class described in which repetition Work is performed upon one sheet under the control of another sheet, in combination With means for feeding blank sheets and means for operating on said sheets in successively fed positions, means for controlling said operations by a pattern sheet and means for feeding said pattern sheet concurrently with said first named sheet, and selecting devices operable to suppress repetition operations derived from certain fields of the pattern sheet.
14. In a duplicating machine, means for operating upon blank sheets, dual means for controlling said operations, said dual means comprising manually operable keys and a .J pattern sheet controlled device, said device serving to control the'eff'ecting of repetition records upon the blank sheet of data derived from the pattern sheet, and means for selectively controlling the transference of data from the pattern sheet to the blank sheet by suppressing the controlling action of said pattern sheet in selected zones or fields.
15. In a duplicating machine, means for feeding sheets and means for operating on said sheets in successive positions, means controlled by a pattern sheet for controlling said operating means, means for feeding said pattern sheet concurrently with said first named sheets to control operations on different fields thereof from corresponding fields on the pattern sheet and means for selectively suppressing the control of said pattern sheet on any desired fields.
16. In a card punching machine electrically actuated punches, key-eontrolled mechanism forselecting said punches, mechanism operating upon actuation of a key to automatically operate the punch selected, means for supporting a vpattern card, means controlled b v said punch operating mechanism for movingr the pattern card after a punching operation to lorate. a portion of the pattern card in a controlling position, and means controlled by the portion of the pattern card in controlling position for operating the foregoing mechanism independently of the keys.

In a punching machine, electrically actuated punch operating mechanism, contact elements controlled by the indicia on a pattern card, connections between said contact elements and the punch operating mechanism for automatically reproducing certain indicia of the pattern card on a card being punched, means for causing simultaneous and synchronous increments of movement in the pattern cardand the card being punched and means for operating the punches independently of the pattern card controlled contact elements.

In a card punching machine, electrically actuated punch operating mechanism, means controlled by a movable pattern card for actuating said mechanism'for duplicating indicia of the pattern 'card on a card bt ing punched, means for rendering the mechanism vcontrolled by the pattern card inoperative and independent means controlling the operation of the punches When not under the control of the pattern card.4

In a punching device, punches, duplicating means cooperating With a pattern vcard to select punches for operation, means for moving said card and duplicating means relatively in a direction parallel to the surface of the card to cooperatively associate different fields of the pattern card with the duplicator, and a manually settable switch for suppressing punch selecting operations from a selected one of the said fields of the pattern card. i

In a punching device, a column of punches, duplicating means cooperating With a pattern card to select punches for operation, means for moving said card and duplicating means relatively in a direction parallel to the` surface of the card to cooperatively associate different fields of the pattern card with the duplicator and a manually settable means for suppressing selection by a selected field of the pattern card of any and all the punchesv in the said column.

In combination, a punching mechanism, means controlled by a pattern card for actuating the punching mechanism, means for moving the pattern card to a new controlling position after each punching operation and means for suppressing the control of the punching` mechanism in selected Zones of card Vmovement.

In apparatus for punching cards to record data successively in ditlerent card fields, punches, duplicating means to control the punching in aceordam'e with a pattern, means for moving` said pattern step by step to successive positionsl and means for` suppressing duplicating punching operations When the pattern card reaches a predetermmed position.

In a. card punching machine, a punching device, an electrical duplicator for controlling the punching device successively in different card columns, a carriage for simultaneously carrying a pattern card throu h the duplicator and a card through t e 'punching device, and selective means for cutting out the duplicator when a predetermined column is reached.

In a machine for perforating cards, punches, operating means therefor, means for supporting a pair of cards having relative rear and forward positions and lying in the same plane, reading devices, means controlled by the devices upon reading perforations in one of said cards for effecting operation of said punch operating means to cause the punches to perforate the other card and means operated by the punch operating means for advancing both cards after a perforating operation, with the rear card moving into the space vacated by the forward card.
