Description

S. E. ROOT.
lclok Diaz. No. 23,950. l Patented May 10, 1859.
' r4A PETERS. Phewmhagnphur, wzsnmgwn, im;
.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
S. E. ROOT, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
CLOCK-DIAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,950, dated May 1G, 1859; Ressued August 3, 1875, No. 6,580.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that S. E. Boor, of Bristol, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clock-Dials; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use it will proceed to describe the construction, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
In the manufacture of clocks, it has become a matter of the greatest importance, in every particular, and in every division and subdivision pursued in making the various parts thereof, to study Welland carefully the durability, richness of appearance in all of the several parts which constitute a clock, and at the same time display skill and ingenuity, in selecting material, employing Vand dividinglabor, so as to produce the greatest amount of executed work, in a given time, and that shall also be rich and attractive in appearance, durable and useful for use, and the least liable to injury, and at great reduction in the cost thereof. Such is the nature and object of this improvement comprising only one of the various parts, or branches in the manufacture of clocks.
n the accompanying drawings Figure l, is a sectional view of my improvement. Fig. Q, is a face view of the same.
, is a wood, composition, or metallic back.
B, is a paper dial.
C, is a curved, or, ornamental frame.
E, is the sash secured to the frame by a joint G, and held closed by a catch H. The back A, may be made entirely flat, when desirable, the dial B, made the same diameter of the back, and the frame made plain and turned over the edges of the frame and back, and cramping them firmly together.
Then desirable to make a. molding frame and back the edge of the back is made nearly the shape of the frame, the dial B, is made of such diameter as to just fill, between the raised portion from the flatsurface of the back fr. The frame C, is placed over the dial B, and the edge D, turned over the edge of the back A, and pressed together, and firmly compressing the edge of the dial between the inner edge of the frame and back.
Thus it will be seen, that I am enabled to produce a cheap, attractive, useful, and desirable article. The simplicity of its construction, the rapidity with which they can be made and furnished for use, and at the same time, being fully equal if not superior to those now made, show the importance, and decided advantage derived therefrom over those now in use.
l do not claim the paper dial in itself considered.
claim- As a new and useful improvement the combination of a clock dial B, metallic back frame C, as a new manufacture specifically as and for the purpose described.
