V TAB LE TOP AND CARP HOLDER Fi led Juhe 2, 1944 2 Sheets-Shqet 2 Inventor Patented Feb. 12, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in card holders, the principal object being to provide a card holder whereby cards 7 can be conveniently held in front of a card player in an upright position and in such a manner as to preclude the likelihood of companion players of viewing the faces of same.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a card holder which can 'be constructed at low cost and either as an individual item or incorporated in a card table.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a card table equipped with the card holding means.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the table shown in Figure 1 and showing in dotted lines the card holders.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the card holder as an article of manufacture.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes a card table top supported by suitable folding legs 6.
Adjacent each side portion of the table top 5 a depending thick portion 1 is provided and formed with several longitudinal card receiving slots 8, the outermost slot being deeper than the next slot and the latter slot being deeper than the next, and so on. These varying depths permit the back cards to be viewed readily by the player. By having the'thickened portions 1 in the slots 8 located below the top surface of the table top 5, there is no obstruction on the table Figure 4 shows the card holder manufactured 40 s as a unit and this consists of a block 9 of wood, plastic or any other suitable material having slots [0, I l and I2 therein of gradually reduced depths, so as before stated the cards in the back slots will have their upper portions higher than the cards in the forward slots to the end that their values can be easily determined.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A four-sided, straight edged card table top with a smooth upper surface and a depending thickened portion integral with said top on its bottom surface opposite each of the sides, a series of pockets running in rows parallel to the corresponding edge of the top formed in said thickened portion with openings through said top surface, the walls of said pockets having smooth faced walls parallelly inclined away from the respective sides. v
2. A four-sided, straight edged card table top with a smooth upper surface and a depending thickened portion integral with said top on its bottom surface opposite each of the sides, a series of pockets running in rows parallel to the corresponding edge of the top formed in said thickened portion with openings through said top surface, the Walls of said pockets being smooth faced and parallelly inclined away from the respective sides, and each succeeding pocket being shallower than the preceding one nearer the respective side, whereby a playing card, placed in a succeeding pocket, may be seen over the top of another card in a preceding pocket.
