v 4 Claims. The current invention'pertains to certainvaluable and innovatory features ofbetterment-and companying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and such apparatus has been fully 'de; scribed hereinafter, it is to be borne in'mind that the invention is not necessarily limited and re stricted to the precise and exact detailsthere'of and that reasonable modifications therein may be availed of without departure from the substance and essence of the invention, asset forth in the appended claims, and without the loss or sacrifice of any of its material benefits and advantages. 7
For simplicity, in this drawing like reference numerals have been employed to designate the same structural parts throughout the several views thereof;
Inthisdrawingj Figure 1 is a plan view of a'clutch pressure-plate mounted on the new work-holder, a portion of the plate, being omitted for greater clarity of illustration; Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the same elements; i i j T Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portiononly of one of the three clamps of the work-holder;
Figure 4 is an enlarged section on line 4- -lof Figurel; and
The round work-piece or clutch-plate Il, whose plane, top surfaceis tobe smoothed or reconditioned by mechanism not shown, has three, equally-spaced, radially-disposed pairs of downwardly or rearwardly projecting adjacent lugsor ears l2, l2 with registered, roundiaperturesja i3 therethrough by means or whichjwith connecting instrumentalities, not shown," the pressure plate, when forming part of the complete clutch-appliance in the automobile, is moved forwardly and rearwardly into operative and "inoperative positions. j I
The novel and improvedholder or'mountingappliance for such clutch-plate includes, in the present instance, around, fiat ring or base ll of somewhat greater diameter than the plate II and having a fiat, smooth, top surface.
At each of three points 120 degrees apart, the upper surface of such base I4 has an upstanding,
1945', SerialNo 596,960 T Y (01. 51 --217) longitudinally-slotted, radially-disposed plate or bar [5 fastened'edgewise-thereon by a pair of screws l6, I6 extending upwardly through countersunkholes through the base I4, such element 5 i5 extending slightly outwardly beyond the cylindrical edge of'the plate i4,as presented most clearly in Figure 4.
The horizontal rectangular slots ll of all three members are'parallel to and at the same distance above the top fiat face oibase l4. Q
Each of the three radial clamps has an inclined abutment plate i8 fastened fixedly to the edge of the part 14 by. a pair of screws l9, l9, as shown inFigures 3 and 4, such inclination being occasioned by the fact that the plate l8 bears against theprotruding end of the corresponding member l.5, such inclination being outwardly upwards so that the exteriorrface of element'lB is not vertical but-veryslightly inclined outwardly from the vertical? V 7 In addition," each'of the clamps includes a. ,U shape yoke 2f, the inner end portions otwhose parallel side-.arms haveregistered holes 22, 22 of substantially the same diameterasv that of the apertures I3, I13, which is approximately the same lasthewidthoi slot ll; *The intermediate cross-member of each yoke 2| 1 has a; 'central, screw-threaded hole therethronghaccommodating ascrew 23 fitted at-its Touterfendwith a handle 24; by means or which it mayibfe turned and adjusted to bear in slightly downwardl directed manner against, and ,as determined'by the outer sloping face of, the abuti'mentmember i8, the width of the latter approximately equalling; the space between the pair of parallel arms of the yoke 2|, element l8 therefore determining the lateral position of the yoke and approximately thatpf the c1utch-p1ate, the distance between the opposite faces or the two lugs l2, I: being about that of the width of the mem- The round'clutch plate to be repaired or rehabilitated is mounted ojn the three radial "holding or retaining clamps'by inserting a one hea'ded pm r rod 25 at 'eaeh'clamp throughithefive, aligned, more or less equal-size apertures or holes 22; 13, 11,13, 22 wherebythe clutch-plate is supported by'the three pins 25 resting on the bottom, "smooth-surfaces of'the three slots i1, each meme her 'IS being'straddIed by the lugs l2, 12.
Then the three screws 23 are tightened sequentially against the'abutmentplates I8 to'draw'the three pins or rods 25 outwardly and firmly downward slightly ori their corresponding slot bottoms,
'until the clutch-plate-is substantially or actually centered and held down-rigidly and securely=in In some 'cases, a precise and exact centering of the plate is not required, but, in any instance, miscentering in substantial degree is not possible by any one clamp because the other two clamps adjustable screw extended through the screwpreclude such occurrence, when the third clamp is threaded hole of each said yoke and adapted to tightened, due to the angular relations of the hear t its inner end ns the rre p ndin clamps toepne another and the lugs on=the:clutclr- 'abutmentzplate whereby :adiustmentct the sevplate to:c'iie.-ribtlier,.
